I'm hearing a scraping noise while moving. It's underneath what appears to be about midway. It's a sound like there is a tool held against the driveshaft and a rotating crunching sound. The sound stopped the last time I drove it and today I ran it about 5 miles. Whe I arrived at home, I put the MH in reverse, it started with the scraping crunching noise again. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is a 2003 Land Yatch 30' Motor Home (Gas) on a P32 Chassis . Thanks.

I'm thinking that it may possibly be the parking brake located on the driveshaft quite possibly midway in your motorhome under the floorboards.

Yes, I would think the drive shaft area also, u joint or support bearings.

Could it be something like a loose mudflap/splash guard rubbing a tire?

I have seen this problem occur on a friend's rig.

Crawled under the MH with grease gun and rags. Pumped grease into four Zerks on the driveshaft and didn't think I would ever see grease push out of the U-joints. Afterward I drove the MH about 10 miles. No scraping noise. Hopefully this took care of the problem. What bothers me though is I just paid $100. for oil change and lub job less than 1500 miles ago (2 Months). Looks like they completely missed the four Zerks on the Drive Shaft.

Keep an eye on the condition going forward to see if it presents noise at some future time. Grease should be applied at 3 months or 3,000 miles WCF. Synthetic grease can extend the time interval by as much as double depending on conditions.

DriVer,
You are probably correct so now I will check all the Zerks throughout along with all the other functions I paid for and did not receive. I will do my own servicing for now on. Also, I will be watching out for a repeat of the scraping noise. Thanks for the advice.

Steve,

I lost my last coach due to services paid for but not performed correctly. Had the engine/transmission oil lines replaced, engine/transmission oil/filters changed and a full lube including wheel bearings, differential and calipers. Lost the coach due to a wheel fire on the first highway trip afterwards. Sombody missed something. Cost of forensics would have exceeded the value of the coach so the insurance company did not want to pursue it.

Sadly some mechanics don't do what you tell or pay them to do.

Glad you caught it. Keep and eye on it and make sure of your options before the warranty on their work expires.

Years ago I had a Ford F100 that developed a kind of a zing zing zing kind of noise. The dust shield (flinger ring) on the pinion shaft had begun to rub on the differential housing. Either it had been impacted or manufactured out of plane.
