Speaking of Recalls....

....in those immortal words of Paul Harvey, here's the REST of the story regarding Toyota's unintended acceleration government investigation that was discussed extensively on this forum. An excerpt follows:

Quote:
Government: No Electronic Flaws in Toyotas

Published February 08, 2011
| Associated Press

The Transportation Department, assisted by engineers with NASA, said its 10-month study of Toyota vehicles concluded there was no electronic cause of unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. The study, which was launched at the request of Congress, responded to consumer complaints that flawed electronics could be the culprit behind Toyota's spate of recalls.

"We feel that Toyota vehicles are safe to drive," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

OK So no electronic issue. They did admit that they had mechanical issues that were resolved by the recall. They admit to mechanically stuck accelerator pedals and bunched up rugs.

Now on my GM vehicle I have a locating pin. My carpets have never shifted. Seems like an inexpensive enough solution that prevents carpet bunching.

One thing that Toyota was not remiss in stating in their release is that by in large these problems were the fault of the driver.

I can see it now .... this whole thread is going to turn into another free for all. Not my choice of things to respond to.

Toyotas have locating pins for the floor mats as well. The "problem" was related to aftermarket floor mats that didn't use the pins and wedged between the accelerator pedal and the floorpan. The sticking pedals were supplied by one U.S. subcontract supplier - sound familiar? The press release I cited came from the U.S. government, not from Toyota.

No need for it to turn into a free for all. I just thought, in the interest of fairness, it was only right to post the final resolution of the matter since it got so much airplay here during the recall discussions.

In the interest of fairness those pedals supplied by one U.S. subcontractor were built to the specs. supplied by Toyota.

Seems odd that when it was discovered that Toyota could get into the onboard computer to find out what was REALLY going on , all the complaints stopped.
Gotta love those attorneys.

At least it didn't "drag on" like the Workhorse brake problem.

If your throttle stuck open, would your first inclination be to call 911 or would you you turn off the key?

You can't fix stupid.

The procedure of shutting down the Toyota while underway is different than when starting, the button needs to be held down. Many had know idea of the difference so when the button was hit to turn it off nothing happened, with the key in the off position it will shut things down. There are different kinds of intelligence and people react differently in stressful situations I think it is unfair to call these people stupid.

I think they proved the 911 call on the stuck throttle was a setup.

That was Stupid, wouldn't you agree?

The 911 fraud that was attempted is a horse of a different color, there was another 911 call that was made prior to the loss of life.

Let's see...I'm driving around with bad brakes, a refrigerator that's about to burst into flames and an instument panel that goes into false alarms all the time.

Has Workhorse or Norcold or Actia been up before congress????

I'll vote for Toyota any time.
