How do I go about taking the cover off the steering column? I need to check the wires for wear and chaffing? I have a few problems and I suspect the cause could be the result of moving the adjustable steering column and thereby pinching the wires inside. Is it within the scope of the do-it-yourself type?

Your doing the correct thing to do, the wires in the harness for ignition switch will rub over the metal bend in the top of steering column. It happened to me blew 40amp fuse after I had a white column of smoke come out of steering wheel.
Happened when we pulled into rest area for lunch and was there till next morning for tow.
The cover on steerig column has screws in the holes you see on it. Back them all off and two pieces will come off.
The metal bend you will see at top of post after I had the harness replaced I placed a wire guard around the wires going over the bend.
Have not had any trouble since, it was in 04.
I can not get in MH to check the screws think they were "phillips" or allen head.

On my 02 the wires were chaffed through. I put a piece of innertube rubber under the bundle and used tie straps to secure it. No problems since. Good luck

Carvin Marvin,
How did you go about getting to the harness and wires to wrap with innertube? Is it just the few screws that 007 refers to. Thanks.
Steve
