2004 w22.with 7,900mls.
It ran perfectly till I parked up for a few days.
I started it up and got a message on the LCD
“no J1939 activity” and the “service engine soon”light came on.
The exhaust smells very rich and when I shift gears it seems to go in a bit heavy with a bit of clunk not smoothly as before.
So far I have unplugged and re connected just about every connection I can find inside and outside of the rig.
Cleaned up all the chassis earths I can find and checked and tested all fuses including fuse 21.
A fellow camper had an OBD11 scanner with some free software an managed to get a P0856 fault code which we think is trac control ?
We cleared it but it came straight back.
Any thoughts or ideas as to what to look for will be greatly appreciated as we are stuck in southern Spain 1500miles from a UK WSC and don’t speak Spanish very well and the wife is starting to panic.
Our internet is only on now and again but I will try and reply to any ideas.
Thanks
Bill

There is another old post from 2008 on iRV2 with the same problem.

In that post, a tech from Brazels said to check fuse #21 and also check the connections on the back of the instrument panel.

GOOD LUCK!

On diesel motors, trac control will come on due to a plugged fuel filter. Maybe the same for you

Thanks RVThere.Just double checked it and I have power on both wires at the back of the fuse box and when I pulled the fuse I lost all the instrument panel.
Thanks Bigdaddy I will keep that in mind for when I get a garage involved so they check it
But the ones I have spoken too so far seem confused as to what J1939 is and are not keen on getting involved.
I think I am dealing with 2 problems J1939 and engine management because from what I have read they are 2 different systems.I hope I am wrong could someone confirm please.
Regards
Bill

I've done some "Googling" of your problem and here's what I've found.

J1939 seems to be the Canadian protocol used in monitoring engines.

See here http://http://old.nabble.com/CAN-OBD...d12153322.html

The error code you're getting appears to be a standard code for all makes of vehicles. See Traction Control

I know you have to access the net for this but it's just too long to write them up here.

In a nut shell, it appears the 0856 trouble code relates to the brake system, particularly the ABS system.

Hope this helps.

Paul

For your assistance I've linked a wiring diagram and DTC procedure for the P0856 code.

http://brazelsrv.com/PDF_Files/P0856.pdf

If you need further assistance please call if you can and I can have our electrical guru Alan assist.

Thanks Paul.I am getting all the info printed so i can try and find someone willing to have a look at it.
This bit is a bit scary and will probably put most off doing the job

Hi Jon.

Thanks Jon for the offer of speaking to Alan and I might have to take you up on it.
I am getting the wiring diagram and DTC procedure printed and run around with it to find someone who can understand it as its way over my head.
I have found some English mechanics who are willing to look at it and are well known in Europe as they usually have a TV film crew with them so that could be interesting.

By the way the RV drove faultlessly on the way down here and was a pleasure to drive on the Koni FSDs.It was great going over the mountains and no longer feeling petrified on every bump in the road. Thanks for being the only man on the planet willing to ship them to me as KoniRV and Koni Holland said NO.They are the best thing we have purchased for the RV by a long long way.
Thanks again Jon
Kind regards
Bill

After 2 months of various auto electricians checking wiring fuses relays and other components (the ones they could test) we had still come up with nothing so last week we had to leave the RV in Spain and drive back in the towcar to England.
I brought back the ECM and the TCM to see if I could get them tested in the UK but after several phone calls I don’t think even that’s possible over here.
But today a friend who has a 2008 w22 said plug them into his RV.I was worried that it may damage his and not sure if his was a 6 speed just plugged in the ECM turned on the ignition only and up jumped “no j1939 ACTIVITY” switched it off and plugged his one back in and all was fine so can anyone tell me if I have found the problem or would it say that because its not for that chassis, also if the ECM is faulty would that give the P0856 fault code. And if it is faulty where could I get one or get it repaired.
Thanks
Bill

Send a message via AIM to oemtech
Get your vin number to Jon at Brazel's and he can check to see if they can get an ECM for you. If they can, they can re-progam it to the stock config.

If all the fuses and wiring checks out then I would feel best about replacing both the ECM & TCM just to rule those out completely. Let me know if you want we can send you pre-programmed computers.
