Stuck in Canada...anyone done their own rear bearings?

Its a longer story, here is the abreviated version. Most here know I had new everything axle related installed including new bearings done at Reeder Chevy in Knoxville recently.

We made it from TN to MN before toasting a rear bearing(900 ish miles. Dropped it off at Gatr Truck Svce Center in St Cloud who fixed it. By the time we crossed the border, the other side was singing.

I have the parts enroute to me and through family here have found a heavy truck mechanic/farmer that has the tools to do the install. I am going to help him install my bearings, so if anyone here has done this and has any advice tips or tricks it would be appreciated.

I have no idea of how Reeder Chevy pooched this install. Gator Truck said the inside bearing was trashed. Gator Truck and Reeder are both "authorized Workhorse Service Centers" but both refused to pay for this. And that is another thread I'm going to start later when I get back home. Needless to say, we are not happy campers.

Contact Kevin who has done the videos here. He just did all of his and is working on a new video.

Which differential do you have? The manuals are available here: http://workhorse.navistar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=574

Good luck, I feel for you. Ironically we got stuck in Nashville this spring.

Motor7 give me a call I just got finished with this project but have not uploaded video yet. My cell 606-875-0125

After they install bearings the differential must be slightly over filled with oil then raise one wheel up 8 inches so the oil will flow into the hub. then raise up the other side 8 inches. Note if you only fill the differential to the fill mark and leave axle level very little if any oil will make it to the hubs. My W24 uses the Dana S130 differential.

LOL, I just thought of this and was going to post they likely didn’t refill the hub area by tipping the differential. That’s probably why the bearings failed so quickly.

Done the bearings on a P30 but not workhorse. The main thing is to get them tightened properly and overfill the diff with oil. Jack up the opposite side as much as you can to get the oil to flow to the bearing.

I think you guys are right. When the noise started, first thing I did was check the diff fluid level...it was an inch low in a parking lot that was slanted towards the fill plug side. The place in St Cloud wrote on The repair ticket that the pumpkin was a quart low.

Hopefully we rear it down tomorrow morning. Kevin I will give you a call in the am.....thanks.

Mine is a W22....not sure which axle yet.....

Getting refund on bearing work.

Write action line at either Trailer life or Motor Home. They are very good at giving places of business bad publicity and getting refunds for poorly done work.

Ok sports fans, the verdict is >in<. Reeder Chevy installed the wrong outer bearing on my Spicer rear end. It was between 1/8 and 1/4" too large Id, it was flopping around on the spindle putting ALL the weight/torque on the inside bearing and race which subsequently failed.
I spent all day at a shop today helping the owner fix this on both sides. He spotted the issue immediately , but somehow Reeder, an Gator Truck missed it. I will upload video when I get home.....,

This is why I don’t trust places to work on my coach, or for that matter my cars. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder with age to do my own work.

Glad you got it figured out, hopefully this will be the last of it and you will have a good trip from here.
