I had that EXACT problem with a Chevy van w/350...it was a small plastic gear accessible on the outside of the xmission...$5 and I was on my way...hope it's that simple.

Do you have reverse gear? Could you possibly have a shift linkage problem, either with the external shift linkage, or internally?

first thing i would do is unplug the kickdown switch on the side, if activated it will not upshift. next check governor see if it is free. remove governor (4 bolt cover on side) hold up by gear and push in weights, valve inside should move. good luck
