we just graduated to a 2006 Winnebago Adventure 38J after many years with Travel Trailers and on our shake down cruise was blown all over the road by wind and trucks. the Motorhome only had 12000 (well now 15000) miles on it. there are Bilsteins installed. do I need to have a steering stabilizer installed ? I realize it is a large billboard, however we are getting ready to head cross country to Alaska and I do not want to fight the steering for 12-15000 miles. thanx for any advice. Len

The latest issue of Motorhome mag has an article on an Itasca that they road tested Roadmaster sway bars on. It's pretty good reading.

1st of all you need to assure that you have a good alignment. Next, check your tire pressures. On your machine I believe the recommendation is for 100 PSI on the front tires.
I would go with the Hellwig Anti Sway setup however if your budget does not allow for that at the moment, a front and rear track bar will yield a significant improvement. If you have a 38J there is a good chance that you have a W24 chassis. You can tell if the VIN# starts off like this: 5B4MPA. If you have a W22 the 6th character will be a "6".

Like Driver said, start with a loaded alignment check, weigh the rig and adjust the tires to the correct pressure according to load.
A steering stabilizer will not correct a swaying problem, but will help to mask it. The best bet to stop staying is the use of adequately sized anti-roll bars on the front AND the rear of the coach..

I'm not sure the sway bars will help in the wind but I put the roadmasters on my W20 and I love'em. I installed mine after picking up my MH and driving it home to oregon from texas. I swore I would not drive it that far ever agin till I felt it was safe. so on went the bars, koni's and rear trac bar from SS. WOW

We just traveled for 250 miles in 25 to 40 mph winds in Arizona and Nevada this past weekend and our Georgie Boy on a w-24 chassis worked very nice. the sway was not really noticeable just a few strong gust now and then would rock us. the wind was strong enough that it would down shift to 4th gear to maintain cruise speed of about 65mph which was more like about 60 with the wind. I agree with the others check tire pressure. mine calls for 100psi in front and 95psi on the rears. Good luck

I just drove in the same winds and tonight am still experiencing them sitting here in Pahrump Nevada . I found that filling up with water and gas also helps. I only loose about 1/3 to 1/2 mpg but am less affected by the wind.

You are a new driver... a good part of your problem was more likely OVER STEERING. Honest.. you can give yourself a tail wag that becomes unbearable after a few hours by over steering... Try relaxing... hands on the wheel but loosely... the motorhome will try to go straight if you let it.

One other technique is to focus on an object 100 or more feet down the road if you are able to do so. This method is taught in many RV driving classes.

Allow me to note that I am sure Driver meant to say "If you have a W22 the 7th character will be a "6."
My W24 has a VIN of 5B4MPA 7.........
