Symptoms of bad 02 sensor????

In 2008, I was going over the Grapevine in CA when I noticed a very slight engine stall and my check engine light came on. Continued to Yosimite and eventually had it checked out. I don't recall the name of the RV shop but they were kind enough to get me in on short notice. They said something about an 02 sensor, reset it and I continued back to San Diego without any further issues.

in 2009, prior to a trip to Yellowstone from San Diego, CA, I had new plugs and wires and the Ultra Power installed at Redlands Performance Truck and RV. About 300 miles into our trip, again while going up a grade, the engine began to loose power. No check engine light came on this time. After letting the RV sit for a while, I was able to start back up and continued on to Yellowstone without any further problems. On the way back however, at the CA/NV state line in over 100 degree temperature, the engine stalled. This time it wouldn't restart. I had my RV towed off the freeway where a local mobile mechanic came out to look at it. He believed it was a bad fuel pump and it was replaced. It should be noted that the day after I was towed and while waiting for the part to arrive, the RV started just fine after apparently cooling down???. The tank was dropped, pump was replaced and I went on my way to San Diego. There was nothing unusual that I could note about the old pump.

Earlier this month, I went back over the Grapevine and my check engine light came on again but with no apparent performance problems. I diconnected the battery, the light reset and we continued to the Sequoia Nat Park. On our way back to San Diego, just 10 miles from home and while clibing a modest grade, the check engine light came on again but this time, the engine began to stall, lost power and would not go more than about 50 MPH. I made it home where it is currently parked.

I will be taking it to the local Workhorse Service Center, Jimmy Johnson Chev next week.

My question is can bad O2 sensors cause this kind of problems? I've lost confidence in my RV's ability to get me to and from my destination without it giving me problems. It has less than 20K miles. I just hope they will be able to pinpoint the problem and not one of those mystery ailments that can't be replicated in the shop and only rears it's head while I'm on the road.

Thanks in advance

Do you have a Scan Gauge II perhaps? So equipped this instrument will display codes when the event manifests even if the IP doesn't tell you a code is present.

I would call Keith at RTS and ask him for an opinion. He is an easy guy to talk to.

I have had to replace 2 02 sensors this past year, 1 driver side, 1 passenger side. In both instances the check engine light came on, and the only noticeable change in engine performance was a very slight reduction in the miles per gallon figures. I have a OBD II scan tool and was able to immediately determine what the check engine light was indicating.

DavidC1225, What was the DTC that was returned by the SG?

I don't remember the codes, but I think it was low voltage on the circuit.

Thanks for the replies. I drove my RV about 20 miles to the service center. Of course, it ran fine with no loss of power but the check engine light is still on. Let's see what they can find.

I will contact RTS next time I am in Redlands to discuss my concerns.
