have a 2004 fleetwood m/h 34ft with the 8.1 chevy engine that i bought new and have changed the oil every 3000 miles or less with 5-30 oil. we now have 29,000 miles and are due for our semi annual oil change and thinking of switching to a synth..
should i switch and will it be better for the engine and if so should i stay with a 5-30 synth. oil and whats a good brand to use. i have no problem at all with the engine, i switched last year to traynsend trans fluid for the allison and now thinking about doing the engine. we plan on keeping the m/h for sometime also.
thanks

I use 10w-30 mobil-1. That's in our 2004 8.1.

As you are native to PA, I would stay with 5W-30 year round. Fully Synthetic motor oil is a great idea and you should look into it. I have purchased NAPA synthetic oil in the past.

Mobil 1... stick with your current viscosity or as close as you can. It will start easier and hold up much better to heat.

Personal opinion....
I would go with 10w-30 unless you are in a cold climate. Onan recommends 30 weight OR a muti-weight depending on the temp range you plan to use it in.

I am out of South Carolina and I run 10W-30 year round. This morning my son sent us a photo from his phone cam showing snow on the lawn in front of his house.
The conditions here in Brooksville, FL are:
and 49 degrees. Expecting temperatures in the teens this evening.

I went with Mobil 1 5/30 at 5000 miles and drove to the RGV in Texas (about 1800 miles) and didn't burn a drop of oil! For the price these rigs cost, synthetic oil gives your engine a little broader protection from oil break down and is well worth the extra price.

I run Mobil-1 ,10/30 and use 5000 miles as the interval between changes, unless I'm on a long extended trip in a short amount of time. I ran California to Washington DC and return on the same oil change, but did it in a 30 day time frame. My 8.1 uses about 2 quarts of oil in 5000 miles, I usually add one quart, and it is near the add mark at oil change time. Temp range here is low 20s to about 107 degrees.

After the initial break in of about 12,000 miles, I began using Mobil 1 5 W 30 fully synthetic, but switched a few years ago to Amzoil series 3000 Heavy Duty Gas/Diesel 5 W 30. Use the same Amzoil oil in our 1 ton diesel extended cargo van with 6.5L TD. Both vehicles run great with this oil. Have about 180,000 miles on the van and 43,200 miles on the class A Allegro Bay (W-22). Bagman57.

DriVer, You better put another log on the fire!
When you really wanna see cold, come on up!

bdaball, But it's not fair! this "is" Florida!
I might have to begin recommending the new Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30 if it gets any colder.
