Synthetic Oil Flush

I had a mechanic tell me today that the better option is to put Synthetic Oil in my 2007 W22 and change the filter, run it on a trip than repeat the process. Does anyone have an opinion on this as the motor has 73,000 miles on it with no previous service history?

I feel a gas motor pulling 20,000 lbs + is a severe service application. Synthetic oil is designed for exactly those conditions. Full synthetic oil is money well spent in a gasser motorhome, in my opinion. A complete oil drain and filter change is all that is needed to switch from dinosaur to synthetic oil. All the best.

In a DP I wouldn't do it, for a gas rig that I was going to keep for 20 years I might change over. The Allison trans now come with synthetic and they last almost forever.

One bit of feedback I received from an old school family member was, why run a newer oil that could possibly clear our any build-up and possibly have you burning more oil.

I'm no mechanic but I always like to use the best products available but also learnt an expensive lesson with a car recently and the old saying, 'if it aint broken don't fix it' rings loud in the back of my mind from it. Hopefully I can get some other feedback from members for one way or the other.

The advantages of synthetic oil in the transmission are well documented. I switched over years ago. The transmission of a motorhome is one of the more expensive things that will break if not taken care of. The cost of synthetic oil versus a new transmission makes it a no-brainer.

Question, are we talking about transmission or engine? The post sounds like He is asking about the engine?? If so I never heard of flushing out the oil to change to synthetic.

Talking engine, replace oil & filter than change both again after a trip or two

I would switch but don't understand the logic in dumping after a trip or two. Change at normal interval. I run synthetic in all my vehicle and the Corvette requires it. GM did that because there was no oil cooler from the factory. The RV gets the European Castrol 0W30.

98 p30 gasser, change oil and filter every 5k miles. Use cheapo Walmart 10w30. 129k on engine, most with toad or boat on back. no problems. Also used same oil on fleet products for my newpapaer business for 32 years changing at the same mileage. Never replaced an engine. Been working on engines for 52 years. Synthetic oil is a waste of good money.

I'm with you on regular oil.

35 years maintaining municipal equipment, always using "State bid" oil.

Only oil related failure was due to an empty crankcase. Dirty air from bad air intake caused the oil consumption.

Synthetic oils claim is longer service intervals. Then many change it sooner then recomended.

I agree with lonfu. I've gotten 80 to 100k on all my vehicles and only lost one engine. A 59 willys L-head jeep that somehow got an oil-pan full of sand.

I realize some would call RV use heavy duty and if running synthetic makes you feel good go for it. But to do a synthetic fill and dump it after one trip sounds like snake oil medicine to me. Maybe your mechanic needs a new propeller for his boat

Appreciate everyone's feedback. I purchased Pennzoil 550038221 Platinum 5W-30 Full Synthetic on Amazon and it was well priced. Will give it a go and wont worry about changing it for 3000 miles.

If I had got to the replies earlier, I say I would have not gone the synthetic route.

You can easily go 5000 miles between oil changes. Especially with synthetic.

Synthetic is not a waste of money. Buy it at Walmart.
