BmanSC, My guess is you have a leak or bad donut gasket between the right engine exhaust manifold and head pipe or a bad Oxygen sensor on the right head pipe. Either problem will cause the Power Control Module (Engine Computer) to think the right bank is running lean and the computer will dump excess fuel in the right injectors causing a rich condition and sooty tail pipe.

Good luck and let us know what you find out when you get the problem solved - Glenn.

This has come up for several years. This is normal. When I had my W-20 it did this. If you do a deep search here you will find it is just the nature of the beast.

Take your old/defective parts to any good Chevrolet\GMC dealer that handles Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks and let them match them up for you. Many Engine parts are the same as the 6500 series KODIAK/TOPKICK Heavy duty truck chassis with the 8.1 Gas engine.

Good Luck - Glenn

I agree with RVTEN as I also have a W-20 and it does the same thing. Besides, we live in the same neck of the woods, more or less.

I'm on my second motorhome with the 8.1 engine. The first one had dual pipes and they were both sooty and completely black. The one we now own has dual's going into one large tail pipe and it has always been sooty and black also.

rvten is correct, if you do a search on this forum you'll find dozens of similar questions as yours with the same answer.
