Thermostat
Okay guys put your thinking cap on. Which of the 2 180 degree thermostats below fit the 8.1L Chevy Votec and which one fits the 5.7L Dodge Hemi?
During my research on this subject I found out there are 3 levels of levels of thermostats.
1) Standard - If it fails it may be open, closed or in-between.
2) Failsafe - If it fails it stays open.
3) High Flow - flows up to 50% more than the standard version.

√ The one on the right is the Workhorse thermostat.
You should have made a Poll!

Yep... The WH stat is 48mm and the Hemi is 63mm. Plus, the Hemi stat a small bypass hole via little brass rivet.
Amazing that an engine that 45% smaller has a stat that is 33% larger.

Thats why one engine has more problems and the otherone doesn't. A car engine is working to hard in a Motorhome.
PS Nice Nice car.

Yea... I hear that Ed.
OBTW - The wife was not to pleased either as the PT Cruiser was her car, so to speak, and the Challenger is a 6 speed stick that she can't drive.

That's why I posted the question...
I just got done installing the one in the Hemi and took me all of 10 mins. I can't image how long it will take on the motor home considering I will have to take the dog house off. I lost maybe a pint of coolant that I did not catch in a baggy.
It took longer to update the ECM for the fan temps. I used a Diablo Predator to make the changes. While I was in there I reset the revlimiter to 6,000 RPMs (6,500 is max) and the top speed to 150 mph from 140 (160 is max)

Perhaps the smaller cooling system on the Hemi requires more rate of flow?
That said I would think that aside from the radiator and I have the coach heater around the water heater (motor aid), they should be pretty close in capacity.

Why add a 180 T Stat... Better over all performance. Dyno runs have shown that engines start to get heat soak at about 200 degrees and that costs you HP/TRQ.
The 5.7L Hemi has a stock 203 degree T Stat... and the fans are set at 217 and 226. I reset them to 190 and 199 after the 180 was installed. A short road test with a SG II hooked up showed 188 degrees just cruising at 65 and outside air was 62.

OK Dale, I'll bite. What is "heat soak" and how does it affect HP/TQ ? Thanks, Ed
