WOW! I sure hope so. An 8.8L "drop in" GAS replacement for the 8.1L GM used by WCC almost sounds too good to be true...and that was before I read their claim of 1,000 lbs-ft of torque. I'm guessing the HP is determined by the application. Make mine around 400! Ed

If it could be a true "drop in" replacment, the next step is to find a drop in replacement for the Allison 1000. I know it has "some" engineering margin, but probably not to 1000 ft lbs.

This would be awesome! Wonder what the price point would be with that engine and a beefier trans compared to a diesel.

While the article does mention "...drop-in ease of transition that it offers for replacing older engines..." nowhere does it say that it is a "drop-in" replacement for the 8.1L we now have. And because of how they describe the strength of the engine internals I suspect the block itself is larger than the 8.1L, which means most likely the engine mounts, bell housing, and other connections make it something other than simply unbolting an 8.1L and bolting in this 8.8L.

They said the block and crank was capable of handling 1000f/lbs of torque. They didn't say the engine put out that much. What they did say was a 20% increase in torque and HP over the traditional big block.

Let's dispatch someone close to Louisville on Nov 29th, and/or Las Vegas on Dec 13th, to get the "skinny" on exactly what they mean by "a fully-integrated drop-in solution"?
Volunteers- ?

But seeing as they already provide an 8.1l for other markets PSI 8.1L - Power Solutions, Inc. – Industrial Engines
I am sure that this is a refinement of that block. The block may be physically larger, but the bellhousing mount could be located the same, and with a modified mount (I doubt the block got substantially larger) it should be a direct bolt up.
My bet is this is exactly why they are headed to Louisville. They want dealers and manufacturers to see it so that they start asking Workhorse about it directly. People want an option other than Ford. And no knock on Ford, but the 8.1 is sadly missed on dealer lots.

8.8L is 537 Cubic Inches
8.1L is 494 Cubic Inches
43 Cubic Inches more probably wouldn't be that much a bigger block to fit where a 8.1L did.
The 8.1L has 455 lb/ft torque and a 20% increase would be 546 lb/ft for the 8.8L
Still much less then a Cummins small 5.9L now 6.7L with over 660 lb/ft
No mention of MPG expected.
Allison 1000 transmission can handle up to 660 lb/ft

BUT, substantially cheaper than a DEF equipped new Cummins. The small Cummins 5.9 was never rated for more than 610lb/ft was it? And as for fuel economy, how is the price of gas compared to diesel in your area? That makes up a good part of the difference doesn't it?
This wasn't supposed to be about gas vs diesel, it was about a new gas option.
