Timing a 1990 454 TBI - Itasca Windcruiser 37
My best Friend has a 1990 Itasca Windcruiser by Winnebago industries with a 454 TBI Chev in it and I'm trying to help him set the timing. From searching the web I've determined that the timing should be at 4 degrees BTDC with the PCM wire for timing unplugged. Problem is the top timing tab at 1 o'clock position can't be used with the #1 plug - no line of sight.
From underneath I found another timing tab on the pan at about the 5 o'clock position. Some web files I've stumbled across say use cylinder #5 or #8 and others say just #5 and others say #4 or #7.
I was able to get underneath and see the timing mark flash on #4 wire only when running, no visual of the mark on other plug wires based on where the distributor was.
While on #4 cyl wire, I had my buddy rotate the distributor a lot until I could get the pulley mark to line up at the 4 deg BTDC but it seems to idle and labor rough at that setting. Wondering if # 4 cylinder is not the one to use?
Can anybody tell me with certainty if it's cylinder # 5, 8, 4 or 7 on 1990 Itasca Windcruiser by Winnebago industries with a Chev 454 TBI when timing from underneath using the bottom timing tab at the 5 o'clock position?

The spark control module may require , a procedure ( wire disconnect ?) to set it into , timing adjustment mode. If not properly set , the module will always run some advance , so you won't get a good base timing adjustment.
Dodge modules did in the early 90's Chevy may be the same.
Didn't the web search turn up the full procedure ?

Could be a wire to remove ; or a wire to be grounded while using the timing light, I can't remember for sure.

Thanks everyone. I've got the timing wire disconnect thing figured out - its next to the coil - green wire with black stripe. I guess #5 is the consensus.
