I have a 1977 Chevrolet Itasca Seafarer. Shes a beauty and runs strong. the problem is that when I went to get the smog done she passed all the tests except the ignition timing but when the mech went to set the timing he found that the mark or indicator was missing, I myself have not much experience with mechanics so I am relaying exactly what he said anyway I have to get this part and its not available at any of the local junk yards. I am really hoping that someone here might be able to help me find this part. I would really like to keep this RV but I might be forced to relinquish it to the city if I cant find this part and pass smog. There is a smog exemption available but when I rang to try avail of this they politely informed me that this part was not on the list of exempt missing pieces that will allow you to get the exemption. they gave me the number of four scarp yards in the bay area and I rang each one in turn to no avail...Please help

dairelyne,

Check the bottom of the engine. Some Chevys of that vintage had provisions to check the ignition timing from the bottom, so the doghouse cover would not have to be removed. The mark is on the bottom left front (drivers side) of the engine. I had a 1978 Southwind with the 454 Chevy and this was the way the timing was set.

The timing mark is on the harmonic balancer, front of the crankshaft - and is usually a small groove or set of grooves running the entire width of the harmonic balancer. The matching indicator is usually a tab of some sort that is attached to or integrated into the timing cover itself - will be designated in degrees, 0, 4, 8, 12 Before/After Top Dead Center etc.

IF the timing tab has been lost or broken off your mechanic can easily create one or purchase a new one (at most any auto parts store) that fits behind 2 of the timing cover bolts for less than $5.00.

Thank all of you for your help so it seems that all I am looking for is a timing tab. Hopefully now the mechanic will be able to order it now that I have this info. Great Forum thanks so much again

Isn't this considered an antique/classic vehicle? I thought C.A. had an exemption to smog test on 30 year or older cars?

No annual smog test is required on vehicles 30 years or older, BUT, I believe a smog test is required on transfer of ownership. I had to have a smog test when I first registered my 55 Chevy and my 60 Vette but none since then.

I believe 1976 and earlier models are exempt.
