What's the best way to change out to syntheic oil? I did the search and got different results, hooking it to the recovery machine, draining it, filling it, running it and draining it again. It's the Allison 1000. The posts were from Driver in 2005, maybe things have changed sense then.

Thanks

Al

Just changed mine out, as others have, at 24,040 to Mobil-1 Syn ATF and filter change. Drained about 11 qts and refilled with 11 1/2 qts. At 50,000 will do the same. Mobil will mix with remaining ATF.
Cost about $65.

It depends on what fill your transmission came with.

Allison/Castro Transyd is ok for all Allison transmissions. It cost anywhere from $32 to over $40 a gallon. It will take at least 3 gallons to do a change. Now, if you what a pure Transyd fluid and qualify for Allison's 100k warranty you will need to change it again.

But, if you transmission came with Dexron III You can use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for about $5 a quart.

OK, I bought this 03 in July with 11,000 miles, now at 14,500, do I assume it was shipped with Dexron III? By the look of the filter it has never been touched. I'm a little thick so to be clear just a couple of questions.

I drain, replace same amount drained put on new filter, run to warm up shifting thru the gears slowly.

Drain again, Replacing drained amount, Do I need to change out the filter again or should I wait till the second time?

I was planing on using Mobil 1 Synthetic but do you guys recomend using Transyd fluid?

Thanks

Al

Yes it has Dexron lll the filter should have been changed at 5000 miles per Allison.
If not do it now the Mobil will mix with Dexron lll. Should be ok for 50000. Than change again with Mobil should be 100%.
You can change again if you want, 100% now.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Now in 2005 GM switched to Dexron VI and will not renew the Dexron III licenses. As I understand it Dexron VI is "compatible" with Dexron III. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
DALE: What you have stated is correct for all GM applications. HOWEVER, there is an ALLISON bulletin out that specifically says DO NOT USE DEXRON VI in Allison transmissions. The bulletin further states that Dex 6 WILL (not "may") cause damage. Apparently the seals Allison used are not "compatible" with the new Dex 6 formula.

The only recommendation Allison offers for a replacement of Dexron III is TranSynd.

That said, I hope to not re-start the debate over alternate brands of synthetic fluid that will work just fine, in addition to TranSynd. ED

Ed, if I read this correct, TES-295 Approved Fluids there are several "Brands" available, however Mobile 1 Syn ATF is not listed.

FRED: the only purpose of my post was to warn readers against using Dextron VI in their Allison tranny. ED

Is Mobile Delvac the same as Mobile 1?

Ed, I was elaborating on your statement of: "The only recommendation Allison offers for a replacement of Dexron III is TranSynd."
