Have a 2002 Sightseer with 112,000 miles bought new. Vin 5b4lp57g423340901. Love this motor home 8.1 on work horse chassis. The shift lever when put in park won't work. I can use the emergency park knob, but want things to work right. The shift lever works freely the trans doesn't slip, works perfectly, but but when shifted into park park gear won't hold. Would appreciate all help. If transmission needs to be replaced or rebuilt can I just pick one up from my local chevy dealer? If so is this the 4L80-E.

That's awesome that you put 112,000 miles on your MH and you still love it. Must be a good one!
I believe if you have a yellow knob, u probably don't have a parking pawl in your tran.
You probably have the autopark which means u have to have 12 volts to release it.
In order to apply my AAPK, I have 3 ways and they all do the same thing. I can put it in the false " Park" with the gear shift, I can pull the yellow knob, or I can simply turn the key off, which I really don't like, but they all do the same thing, cut voltage to the P brake.
I would guess something happened to yours that is not cutting the voltage when u put it in Park.
It doesn't sound like u have transmission troubles.
I never heard of this problem before, let us know what the problem was when u get it fixed.

The shift linkage may be out of adjustment or you broke the park pawl. The adjustment is simple the park pawl is another story. If you want to R/R the trans yourself, just have your local trans shop do a rebuild.

Edwardedward:

Your P32 chassis (18,000 pound GVWR) has NO park pawl in its GM 4L80-E tranny. That is why it has the infamous J71 AAPB. You seem to be confusing operation, or lack thereof, of the AAPB with a tranny failure, which I doubt you have.

If your "parking brake" does not hold when you "shift" to park using the lever, then it also should not hold simply because you used the yellow knob. BOTH of these actions are intended to accomplish the same thing, which is to release the pressure which is preventing the spring from applying the parking brake shoe into the drum on your drive shaft. I guessing your AAPB is in need of adjustment, but.......

Please try applying the AAPB both ways and reply back with your results so you can get better help for your specific problem.

In the meantime, better have somebody helping with some CHOCKS, if needed.

S-R & DriVer: Thank you for those kind words, just trying to be helpful. I'm NOT known for uttering "keep the change"

This tells me the AAPB is working, sounds like Park position is not cutting the voltage to apply the brake.
Try turning the key off, that should apply your brake too and will eliminate transmission or parking brake problem.

Thanks to all who responded. Just tried what you suggested, turning the key off also worked. If park position isn't cutting voltage. Is their a relay, a switch, or what? would the part be in the steering column under the coach? Sorry but have no idea of what to look for. Thanks I'm totally lost but pointed in the right direction with what to look for, I'm sure I could manage. This is the greatest web site

At least you eliminated the bigger problems, the tranny or the autopark. I've never heard of your problem. I would think there is something that when you put it in park, it turns some kind of switch off and for some reason it is not doing it.
The spring operated parking brake is always applied unless you have 12 volt power to release it.
You should contact 'Old Used Bear', he is the Autopark expert. Someone will give you his email address, I bet.

My Autopark manual that came with the MH also says the The Park position on the gearshift, the Yellow Knob, or turning the key off, all do the same thing, de-energize the system, which defaults to the spring applied PB.
Since 2 of the 3 ways to apply the PB work, I suspect it could be your ignition switch, seems weird, but your gear shift has rods that go into the ignition switch telling it is in neutral, or reverse or park. You may find this" Ignition Switch Mod" interesting
Oemy's Web Site - DIY Projects

and also check out the entire site. I believe it is the most informative site for Workhorse on the planet, and the owner is an active member here.

Old Used Bear is a great guy and Autopark expert, but your problem doesnt sound like 'the typical' autopark problem, but OUB may have heard of it.

Yea, 112,000 miles on your P-32. That may be the record around here for any Workhrse, "U Da Man"
