I have a 2004 Workhorse with a 5 speed Allison 1000 transmission. I have 24000 miles on it. The transmission has dextron fluid in it now. I want to change the spin on filter and drain the pan and install Transend fluid. Can anyone tell me how much fluid I will need to do this. I know I cannot get all the fluid out but I intend on servicing it again in another year, which will be about 5000 miles down the road. At that time when I service it the fluid will be mostly transend. I thought I read somewhere that I will need 7 1/2 qt for the refill. I am hoping someone can clear this up for me, so I will know how much oil to purchase.

all you needed to do was a search of this forum to find plentyof threads on the subject.......but, to answer your question, you need to buy 3 gallons of TranSynd or other approved TES-295 fluid to accomplish a single drain refill. Put back exactly how much drains out, warm it up, and recheck using dipstick to assure the proper level. Don't forget to reuse the filter magnet. Ed

Don't forget the flat doughnut shaped magnet on the top of the filter. Remove it for reuse BEFORE you dispose of the filter.

Note that the dumpster pickup guys will come about 30 seconds after you drop the filter and magnet into the dumpster.

The minimum is going to be 10.5 quarts. Do what Ed said! Buy 3 gallons.

i left my moho sit unstarted for about 3 weeks. apparently the torque converter fluid drained into the pan. i drained 13.5 quarts of fluid with what was in the filter. i let it drain for several hours. per allison, my 5 sp holds 14.1 qts. that is a 95.7% change in one shot which is good enough for me.
i am using amsoil synthetic torque drive tes295 fluid. the transmission is quieter and shifts smoother.
my scan gauge 2 indicates about the same temperatures that it did before the change, 137 degrees f. when in cruise. the temp does climb somewhat when descending mountain grades. i have seen 225 degrees.

DAN L., At one point in my 2 drain service I did get something like 13.5 quarts from the transmission. The overnight drain interval is the recommended method to drain as much out of the transmission as possible.

Do that same procedure twice, and you'll have a very high concentration of TES-295. "Mr. Transynd" has also stated that drain it once like that, drive it for a few miles to mix stuff up and drain it again. This gets you to that high >95%tile ratio quickly.

If you are going to adopt the strategy - do your transmission a favor and do it all NOW. Why wait a year and drive around with a half done job.

That said, none of that fluid came from the torque converter. The fluid comes via gravity from the transmission cooler and lines. According to Allison the torque converter can not be drained nor is there any provision to drain the converter other than removing the transmission and manually draining the converter.

(I know that you will be looking this up )

i can't find the reference now but ims the ref. stated something like the new transmission fill is 14.1 qts.
that would seem to me to include the torque converter. is there any other way to get fluid in the torque converter except to run the engine?
how much fluid does the torque converter hold?

Look out now - I'm gonna do a little math

The pan off oil change capacity is stated as 10.4 quarts. We have drained 13.5 when we tried but we see the total capacity as 14.1. I'm going with 3.7 quarts. I'm figuring that the cooler and the lines do not figure into the numbers that were published by Allison since those might vary from one vehicle to the next. I'm thinking Total fluid capacity (minus) pan off capacity = 3.7 qts.

Hey, that sounds reasonable for the capacity. Have any idea about the empty, and full weight of the torque converter? .

There must be different values for different years.

My Workhorse owner's Manual states; quote

Allison Transmission Fluid Capacity
Quarts
Standard oil pan 15.0
Dry 19.0

(Includes the fluid capacity of the torque converter, transmission cooler lines and transmission oil cooler.)
Transmission oil pan/filter service (fluid) quantity is 9.0-9.5 quarts.

I didn't include the metric values in the table. Now this is copied verbatum otherwise. Puting what they did about the value includeing the cooler lines, cooler and torque converter w/o stateing which value that refers to is less than clear, one presumes it is the dry value, but it sure isn't clear.
(the forum grammer doesn't allow me to do the table with columns as it is printed.)

Here's what I have in the 2006 Chassis Guide for the 1000MH and 2
2100MH - 6 Speed. I have an LCT1000 so it could be different, I'd have to find an older WGMHCG.

Easy to do, but what about copyright laws?
