Troubleshooting brake issues Workhorse UFO

Hi,

Up until a month ago I had issues with the parking brake locking up intermittently.

The Wabco Diagnostics software and Wabco tech support diagnosed the issue as faulty HCU. The 3rd party warranty sent an assesor out and they agreed with this diagnosis. My mechanic reckoned it qould cost about 5,000$.

When the HCU was installed the same issue appeared, my mechanic found that the wiring harness was corroded, so he replaced it. He put back in the old HCU (this was a 2012 rebuild) and all has been fine since.

The total was about 900$ in labor and 400$ for the harness. If the harness had been diagnosed first it would have been maybe 700$ total.

On a side note: The warranty company denied payment due to the corrosion and mis diagnosis. I am appealing this as there assesor signed off on it. The corroded harness I will end up paying for as corrosion is not covered.

Just wondering why the mechanic didnt look at the harness before talking to Webco about the HCU.

Maybe Webco should take a look at their trouble shooting procedures.

Checking wiring for continuity is probaly the first step of troubleshooting.

I know we are all human and can overlook things.

I bet he'll grab the multimeter more often now.

I don't blame the warranty company for denying the claim, look how much it cost them with the misdiagnosed HCU replacement.

Alot of time wasted.

How many hours to replace the HCU harness?

I would also ask the mechanic to "help" out with that bill, it was partly his fault on the miss diagnoses.

Good luck with your appeal.

Hi CJ,

No idea why the harness was not checked. The mechanic had spoke to Brazels about it also.

The warranty company did not pay for the HCU as it was sent back. Not sure exactly how much labor was for the harness but it was not a lot.

He is only guy I could find within 50 miles that could work on the Wabco hydraulic brakes, most places only work on air.

If the appeal is denied I will pay the lot as want to hold on this guy.

Turns out the 1400$ was the labour and parts for the wiring harness.
