IF you're talking about an Allison Six-speed, where both 5th and 6th gears are "overdrive", then it will shift to the "2nd overdrive" ( 6th gear ) any time your speed and grade allow it. The ECM and TCM will "decide" this for you.

This assumes you have the 3-position OD switch in the position which allows upshifting to 6th.

For best gas mileage, leave the overdrive on (This will allow the tranny to shift to 6th gear)

I only use it to limit the maximum gear to slow my motorhome when going downhill, rather than burn up the brakes. I came down the Rockies last week and only touch the brakes twice (with a toad).

You'll note as you turn the overdrive off the maximum gear in the display will be 5 in the middle position and 4 at the top.
