Today I just had my second leaking waterpump replaced. I have 4,900 miles on this motorhome. The last pump was replaced 900 miles ago.
Both pumps appeared to be leaking from the plate on the back of the pump. I have never seen a pump leak there unless it was old and corroded, or damaged by the impeller.
Both times workhorse had never heard of any fca, or waterpump problems on the UFO. Both times I checked the fca and had the mechanic that replaced the pump check it.
We are going to be leaving at the end of the month for southern Utah, and making a loop through northern Arizonia. We will be starting off traveling Hwy 50 across Nevada, and on my way back from the shop I was thinking about buying a waterpump and antifreeze. When I got home my wife asked me about buying a pump.
It is frustrating to be thinking about carrying spare parts for a new motorhome.
Was there any discussion of these problems at the Workhorse rally?

I don't know about Bakersfield, but there was some short discussion at the Myrtle Beach rally, but nothing official has happened yet. I can tell you that us owners have figured out that one of the symptons of a bad FCA is low mileage, less than 7 mpg as an avg. One coach with a bad FCA never broke 6 mpg until the FCA was replaced. I get close to 8 mpg 7.77 to be exact.

CJ5 Jeeper, when you say "Workhorse never heard of any FCA problems" are you referring to a Workhorse Dealer? Because believe me, Workhorse is aware of this issue. It was discussed VERY briefly at the Bakersfield Rally, Alan said they were working on this.
Not sure where you are located, but get in touch with your local Workhorse Regional Service Manager, and discuss this issue with him. Ask for a newly validated Fan Clutch to be installed. Jesse is one of the Regional Service Managers 801-721-1349. He was instrumental in getting me a newly designed fan clutch after our failure. So far 4000 miles and know issues or problems.
Good luck!!!

cj5 jeeper, Folks often confuse what the Workhorse dealer will say and what the Workhorse Technical Assistance Center (TAC) will say. In some cases the dealer (not all by the way there are excellent dealerships out there) might not be up to speed on systems that they haven't had exposure to. The UFO is essentially new technology and until the dealers experience a few of these these types of vehicles going through their doors they may not be able to offer the best opinions.
I hate to keep saying it, but call Workhorse Customer & Roadside Assistance, 877-946-7731 for all matters concerning your service satisfaction. They will alert the proper resource to get you back on the road and running well. They will also put you in touch with a center that should be able to accommodate your needs.
If all of that does not workout, you can call the TAC about your situation if it does not improve at 248-588-5300.

I hate to tell you driver, but the people at roadside assistance do not know of any fca or waterpump problems, or are instructed to say nothing. I did not expect the shops to know about these issues.
I will say the people at the roadside assistance number are outstanding in getting service when you have a problem. After four visits to shops and one tow I should know. Two computer problems, and two waterpumps give me an average of 1000 miles per breakdown.
Gramps-my mileage has averaged 6.13 from first fillup to last. I use cruse whenever possable and stay under 62mph. I expected to do better given the shape of the Rexhall. If you are correct that would explain two problems.
Thanks to all of you for your input, I now have two numbers to call and see what they say.
Hopefully I can raise both my mpg, and my miles per breakdown.

CJ5 Jeeper, That mileage situation sounds familiar to me. Next time you are driving your coach on the highway, climbing a grade, turn up the volume on your back up camera, listen to see if your hear any change in sound. I spoke to another UFO owner and he did that and it never changed pitch. After my failure, and the newly designed fan clutch was installed, I can listen via the mic on the backup camera I can hear the fan clutch coming on and going off. I hope you have looked back for the posts relating to this issue, there's alot of info there. At the Bakersfield Rally in March, I was told that Workhorse is dealing with this on an individual basis, so, have them address your issue as an, "individual basis" so you can move on and enjoy your coach.

To all:
I asked specifically about the FCA issue and where it stood with respect to some type of fix. My interpretation of the response was this:
1. The FCA was designed for up to 4000 RPM based on the information provided at the Bakersfield Rally.
2. The vendor had changed the lube oil viscosity in the FCA they provide without concurrance from Workhorse.
3. The vendor is supposed to be making replacement FCA's for all units affected by the viscosity change at a minimum and possibly will be for all UFO's.
4. There was no specifics on a date or time frame for replacements based on the feedback from the forum at Bakersfield.
I would believe that nothing will get done with respect to some type of recall or rework unless there are failures and only the failed unit will get the new FCA. The only way I see this changing is if the UFO owners as a group petititon Workhorse for replacement part as they obviously do not meet the Workhorse specifications and let Workhorse pressure the vendor to supply the correct parts.
Regards

cj5 jeeper, I was suggesting that roadside assistance will get you through to the most logical resource in order to take care of the problem. I don't expect that they will have first hand technical knowledge regarding the FCA issue. I do see that in the past C&RA appears to have addressed your immediate needs.
You will find that we have an excellent core of UFO drivers here that have dealt with this issue before. They will be a good resource for you in sharing their experiences with the FCA and water pump issue on the UFO.

-Gramps-, I was just thinking, it might be cool if some of the other UFO drivers adopted your avatar pic.

Thats allright by me. Anyone UFO owner who wants it can have it. I can make it available on my ftp site.
By the way don't forget we also have the DriveaUFO.com site for us owners as well with our own forums.

I called the tech line today, they said engineering was working on the problem, and someone would call me back.
I like the idea of turning on the camera mike, depending on what workhorse says I will take a ride up hwy 80, and that will tell me if it is cycling. Thanks.
I read that thread about your problems in Reno right after I bought this motorhome. At the time I thought did I just trade blowing a sparkplug out of my V10 for puting a fan through a radiator.

Perhaps there is something to be said about a front engine motorhome. You can hear when something is amiss such as the FCA constantly running.
Hope you get it all resolved.
