Does your 8.1 use oil?? Mine uses 1 qt to every 2925 miles. I was just wondering how much oil others use.

The normal oil consumption as defined by Workhorse is that the 8.1L engine may consume as much as 1 quart of oil per 100 gallons of gasoline.

This would be normal in the opinion of Workhorse. My experience varies from this and I don't use that much oil however I might consume a quart of oil ~1,000 miles.

In my experience over the past 63000 miles, the oil consumption seems to be very proportional to how hard you work the engine. I have seen 1 quart in 1000 miles of fighting headwinds and hill pulling. I have also seen 2500 miles in easy to mixed driving conditions. I just cant get to most places from where I live to where I go with out first climbing to elevations of 6000 to 7000 feet. I suppose frequent long grade braking also helps suck up some oil too. I didn't see any change to brag about after switching(at27000) to Synthetics either.

My 8.1 uses about one quart every 2500 miles or so. I change oil at 5000 mile intervals, so usually add one quart at about 2500 after changing, and it is a quart low at change time. Been this way since new, it has just over 40K miles now. I use Mobil 1 10W/30.

I usually end up adding 1/2 a quart about every 1000 to 1500 miles. Oil usage varies a little, and I agree with M&EM that the amount may depend on driving conditions.

I had to add a quart of oil a month ago while on my way back from a trip to North GA. I had no idea this engine used oil, and luckily I had a 1/2 quart in the basement and was able to add it to the crankcase after I got the add oil warning on the dash. It had me in a panic, but after seeing this thread, I guess a couple quarts of oil will be part of my standard load from here on out...

Paul, I normally have a quart in my locker and I will wait normally until it gets down to the add 1 quart mark rather than adding the half quart. The justification for that is called "Operational Range.'

I also have read material from technical writers that have suggested this is the way to go.

I add about 1 qt every 2500 miles. It has been this way since I purchased it. I believe this is normal.

This reminds me.. Need to check oil.

Mine uses oil when I'm mountain climbing,, Flat lands or gently rolling it ... Well.. perhaps a qt between oil changes. Not much at all.

so far 2500 miles since I changed it out after buying & hasn't burned any, I know of some folks with older 8.1's in the GM HD pickups that went to 15w-40 oil after noticing oil usage & it went away...I used 10w-30 when I changed it so we'll see...

In 45,000 miles I have never been able to add a qt of oil before 4000 miles. This has often included trips over the Rockey Mts. I have also always used Mobil 1, 10W/30. I have always thought that those using 5W oil (of any kind) might use more oil?????
