Vacuum in fuel tank

I recently completed a 5500 mile trip. On 3 occations during this trip, I had a tremindous amount of vacuum in the fuel tank when I removed the fuel tank cap. It was enough vacuum that I feared the tank may have collapsed. After the 3rd time I started a visual inspection of the tank prior to removing the cap but of course, it never happened again. Is this something I should be concerned with?

Thanks

The fuel tank vent rcovery system put a vacuam on the tank and runs it thew the engine so the is normal. If you live in a state with emitions inspections one of the things they check is the cap for proper seal.

I will add to Speed Racers post above, that there is a pressure relief, and a vacuum relief valve built into the vapor recovery system. You may be having a problem with the relief valve for excessive vacuum. I would keep an eye on it, a little vacuum is ok, but... I have seen in a couple of cases envolving cars, where the fuel tank was actually partially collapsed due to excessive vacuum. The vapor recovery system is covered by your emissions warranty, check your warranty booklet, some states have longer coverage than others.

Dieselclacker, I think that it's 5/60 if I'm not mistaken.

I just checked my warranty booklet, you are correct, (actually 5/50. I live in California, (land of milk and honey), and today WILDFIRES.Out here vehicles up to 14000 GVW are covered for emission related systems for 7/70. Alas, my 21K W-22 doesn't qualify, nor does the original poster. The warranty booklet lists several other states that have the 7/70 emissions warranty for medium duty chassis, (up to 14K).
