Sorry to beat a dead horse but. I have owned an '03 Allegro 32' on a w-20 for 2 years. On 3 occasions the rear brakes have gotten hot. Not really hot but enough to smell inside and produce a little smoke. On the last occasion (March 8, 2008) the ABS light came on. This happened just before arriving camp. The Next day I had no problem.

On the first 2 occasions I had the callipers cleaned, lubed, changed brake hoses and changed the fluid and pads.

Now I'm just getting fed up.

I called a local Workhorse center and was told that a new style caliper has replaced the old one. This new one has larger Pistons.

My question to you is if anyone has changed to this "new" caliper and has it solved your problem?

I just purchased a Toad but am afraid to pull it until the issue is resolved.(I will be using a braking system.)

BTW I wasn't towing and I do not fall in the recall of this brake issue.

Thanks for your thoughts and replies.

I am very interested in any replies myself! I have the same year and model chassis as yours. I had the left rear brake overheating this past columbus day and haven't driven it since.(cant afford any more damage). It sounds like these bosch calipers might be the culpret. The earlier model recall only led to the same issues as ours.Maybe the newer calipers are the answers.
If indeed they are defective they should make good and replace them all. Its a shame my $70k motorhome is sitting in my driveway unable to be used because of faulty brakes!

Scott, when did workhorse say they started to use different calipers? I've had some major failures with mine and would like to know if I have these new calipers.

Follow up.

When I talked to the WH service center, I was told that the old design calipers were silver in color. The "new" style was painted black. Today I finaly had time to check mine. Not to my suprise, mine are black. I will try tomorrow to find more info.

In the mean time I have emailed my concerns to Workhorse customer support. I will let you know what they have to say.

jdsr, The newer calipers that their referring to are the new generation WH chassis, 07 and newer(I think!). Yours and mine are newer than the 02 bosch recall which they replaced with our style caliper. They were still failing. I hope bosch gets involved in this investigation.

Update to my issue.

I had to have a new caliper installed on my left rear brake this week. The new caliper is silver. So much for the statement that updated calipers are black.

I emailed workhorse for suggestions on resolving this reoccuring issue. Their response was that my MH brake calipers were changed/updated in '05. That tells me - NO your SOL.(I purchased the MH used in '06 and didn't know the calipers were changed. This also doesn't show on "MY WORKHORSE".)

For those of you that don't have brake problems I'm curious to know how often you operate the RV. Mechanics tell me low use is terrible on brakes. I fall into this catagory. (7k miles a yr).

Thanks

Scott
I have also emailed Bosch for suggestions but haven't gotten a response.

I have 35000 miles on my Chieftain which is a little older than 5 years. I have had no brake problems. I just had the rotors and pads checked a couple of weeks ago. Everything is OK.

I use mine more than most, 54,398 as of 3/14/08. Had my first front brake job at 49,884 and the rears were just done at 53,937. I did the brakes my self and none of the calipers or rotors had any excessive heat damage. I do think that not enough use is a factor in brake failure such as sticking calipers. Just my opinion as a service tech.
