Hi,
Coming out of Ft. Wayne, IN my ABS light came on at a light. After I started driving it went out but came back on at next light.

I pulled off and no heat in any of the wheels. I had no cruise control and the 4-way's didn't work. Brake lights work and turn signals.

Fluid is ok and brakes work ok. I drove it home and parked it.

Question 1: Can I replace the hoses with WH parts or get them made?

#2: Can I use a synthetic DOT 3 and 4 rated or just DOT 3?

#3: Can I do this first then find the problem if it doesn't go away?

#4: Is the ABS, cruise control and 4-way's tied together?

Thank you

Ron

If you are talking about your BRAKE HOSES, you can use any aftermarket BRAKE HOSE that is the same as you remove. Wagner and Bendix both make aftermarket brake line hoses.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">#2: Can I use a synthetic DOT 3 and 4 rated or just DOT 3? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

You can use either DOT 3 or Dot 4, but do not mix them. DOT 3 & DOT 4 are NOT SYNTHETIC. DOT 5 is a synthetic and is not for use on systems NOT built specifically for DOT 5 use. You should flush your brake fluid every two to three years. Your W-22 came with DOT 3 from the factory.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">#3: Can I do this first then find the problem if it doesn't go away? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I suggest you find your problems first, before you do anything. Most real mechanical or electrical problems do not "go away" or "fix themselves", however most "operator errors" do tend to go-away over time....

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">#4: Is the ABS, cruise control and 4-way's tied together? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

No, not directly. Your ABS system is a stand alone system. You can actually lose The ABS functionality entirely, and it will not affect the brakes as to being able to stop as you normally would if your rig did not come with an ABS system.

I think you may have more than one problem. The first thing you should do is check all your fuse panels for blown fuses, then go from there to diagnose each problem separately.

Good luck and let us know what you find with your fuse check. - Glenn

How ok is your brake fluid level? Had similar response to start and stop motion. Resevoir fluid was low enough to trigger fluid level sensor due to motion of fluid in the resevoir during start and stop. Adding fluid DOT3 immediatly corrected my ABS light issue.

I agree with Marty in the above post. Before you try anything else, top off the brake master cylinder to the correct level with DOT-3 fluid, and see if this doesn't fix your problem.

One thing to note. The cruise control is affected by the brake light switch as are the 4 way flashers.
Neither one will work if the brake light switch is activated.

After making sure the fluid level is okay I would check the adjustment of the switch and then see if the ABS problem is still there.

First of all treat each issue as a separate problem until you can link them together.

1) ABS light - Check each sensor and connection. You can pull the sensor out clean, lube and re-seat them. See my web site ABS Sensor

2)Brake hoses - As Glenn states any number of after market version are available.

3) NOT all brake fluid is synthetic. DOT3 is standard in most applications. DOT 4 is used in HD applications and will have higher boiling point than DOT3.

DOT 5 is silicone based and is use in race applications mostly from my experience.

DO NOT mix any of them ESPECIALLY DOT 5.

There are multiple ways to bleed your brakes.
Gravity, 2 man and pressure. See my web site for Gravity Bleed Your Brakes

4) Check your fuses for cruise and 4 ways. See my web site for Workhorse Fuse Panels

Ok,

The 4-ways had a blown fuse. Fixed that. Found out that the brake light stays on sometimes. Have to check the switch. I added some fluid but ABS light still comes on.

Tomorrow I will clean the ABS switchs.

Can't find aftermarket brake lines at this time. Anyone have a source or part # that I can use?

Sure glad I have some time to get this all fixed.

Thanks

Ron

Hi all,

Just thought I would give everyone an update. I replaced fuse for 4-way's, it works. Adjusted the brake light switch and put a spring on the arm to help a full return of pedal. Cleaned and tested the ABS sensors, all ok. Changed the fluid to new DOT 3.

All I need to do now is drive it and see what happens. Messed up my back and neck and have to sleep in a tilt-back chair. Today it is somewhat better. So will drive sometime first of week to see what happens.

Thanks to everyone and a special thanks to Mutha for taking his time to talk to me. He helped me and best of all saved me a lot of money. Thanks.

Will come back with an update.

Ron

Hi,

Update on brakes. They are ok now. I just drove the moto and the ABS light went out and the cruise works.

The old gal is ready for her next trip. Will go to PA. for Labor Day weekend.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Ron
