What should the oil pressure be in the w-22 driving down the road?? Today I was playing with the dash and put the oil pressure info on and it was 40 PSI at 50 MPH. Is that the norm?

Oh the old oil pressure post. We all seemed to have experience some nervousness at one time or another over it. The oil pump on the 8.1 is what is referred to as a high volume/low pressure unit. With that said, with the oil warm at highway speeds, mine is between 40 and 42. Don't look when sitting at a stop light on a warm day like I did, you will feel your stomach tense up at 16 p.s.i. The result is she purrs like a kitten with no strange noises, and no idiot lights on the dash. Our electronic gages probably aren't the best, a mechanical or Scangage would be better. I use a Napa Gold 1060 filter and Mobil 1 5W-30. 31000 miles and counting. Don't be scared, drive it like you stole it!

Mike

Thanks guys for that info, you are right, as I was driving down the freeway and seen 40PSI my heart stopped and turned the radio off to hear anything that I never heard before.

Mike, question, what did it cost for that second engine?? I was looking at that old extented warranty thing and for the cost I could cover everything but the engine if it goes. This way I could do the math.

Thanks
Paul

I too had misgivings about 40-44psi oil pressure at highway speeds. The first time I saw 16psi at a stop light, I almost had a stroke. I researched and found out about the hi volume low pressure oil pump.

I might be barking up the wrong tree but I believe this is one of the reasons why we should not use motor oil with over a 30W weight rating. I cringe when people tell me that they run a 15W-40 weight motor oil. I use a 10W-30 just because I live in SC and it doesn't ever go below 0°F here.

I just finished changing the 5-30W Mobil-1 oil and NAPA Gold filter today. The idle presuure (mechanical gauge) looks to be about 35 at idle and 45 at highway speed. It does seem to drop as one approaches oil change time.
Purrs like a kitty...., Stops like a horse! But that will be changing real soon.

bdaball, that is great that you have 35 psi at an idle. Was that with a warm engine after you have driven for a while, or at a cold idle? If it is indeed when it is warm, than you have achieved something that the rest of us could only dream of. Good job on the Mobil 1, it is one of the best things that you can do for your engine

Every thing I own has Mobil-1 in it. Been doing it for years. I first changed it in the motorhome at about 10,000 miles. I did see a 1-1.5 mpg increase at that time.
$20.00 / 5qt jug at Walmart.

I am with you. It is even in my lawn mower and snow blower. The price has gone up a bit at Wall World, but it is still a great deal.
