I understand that they are supposed to be repacked at 12000 miles. Since I'll be on the road when that comes up, how much more can I count on before things go south?

My opinion: If you can, have them repacked before starting your trip. A few hundred miles prior won't make a difference. By the same token, if the wheel bearings are running in bearing grease, I wouldn't worry about them until after the trip is made. If the wheel hub is oil filled, check level to make sure it's at the proper level and book on until after the trip.
Still my opinion, grease and/or oil don't go bad right at 12,000 miles mark. That milage is just a recommended spot.
Good luck on your trip.
Marty

Finhawk, The front bearing on your W24 do not require re-packing. They are wet bearings and as such require no maintenance. Just keep an eye on the levels. The level should be about 1/3 of the way from the circular line and the fill hole in the center of the hub. Do not overfill, it gets messy. The plug on the side is a drain. The hole in the front is the fill. Do not get the rubber plug dirty or loose it.
