Driving through the Everglades/Big Cypress National Preserve in south Florida on Highway 41 today, in periods of heavy rain, I noticed the gas and temperature gauges were illuminated with an aqua blue color, versus the soft white for the tach and speedometer gauges. As far as I can remember, all gauges started out with soft white illumination.

After reaching my location for the day, I checked the display and all gauges were back to a soft white illumination.

The chassis warranty is coming up on three years (this July) so I'd like to know if this a sign of impending doom for the display or is there something else at play, e.g., let's change the color of the backlight and see if anyone notices ...

Wayne

Wayne, You do know that you can indeed change the background color on your gages? I think you have at least 5 options perhaps 6.

I am not sure why the IP would change colors all on its own. The new IPs (2006 & up) do not seem to present as many problems.

Thanks for the information DriVer. I did not know the color could be changed; and I have read the manual. Occasionally I check the avg MPG so maybe I pushed a different sequence of the "Trip" and "Mode" buttons somewhere along the line.

Looks like it's time to re-read the manual for that feature!

I don't recall seeing that option... Where? How?

I wonder if MAF filter was picking up water through your air filter from all the rain you were driving through causing display to change colors. Check your air filter?

After some fiddling with the display, here's what I found. Bear in mind I have a 2007 W-24 chassis on a 2008 coach body so everything that follows is from that perspective. Also, the manual I have is copyrighted 2006 with the following on each page: 2006 Workhorse Custom Chassis - All Rights Reserved.

Page 94 of my manual describes how to access the Diagnostics Menus: ignition on, transmission in Park or Neutral, parking brake set, and press the Mode button for 8 seconds and release.

The menu that is displayed is similar to what's on Page 96 of my manual but not the same; here's what is displayed on my coach is:
  • Contrast Adjustment
  • Restore Defaults
  • Gauge Backlight
    • White
    • Red
    • Green
    • Blue
    • Yellow
    • Lt. Bllue
  • Software Version
  • Part No
  • Engine Hours
  • Max Engine RPM
  • Max Vehicle Speed
  • Engine Oil Life Reminder
  • Cluster Diagnostics
    • Gauge Test
    • Warning Light Test
    • LCD Test
    • Back-lighting Test
    • Speaker Test
    • Switch Inputs
    • Analog Inputs
    • Frequency Inputs
    • Exit Menu
  • AutoPark J72 Reset
  • Exit Menu
Entering the Gauge Backlight menu allows scrolling through the color options. Results I found are in the attachment.

While I could live with how this is working, it seems to indicate something's not right so I'll give Workhorse a call. I crawled underneath the chassis to look at the air filter, cover's on tight and didn't see anything suspicious, although water certainly could have gotten into the tuba opening while I was driving, or perhaps to whatever controls the gauge backlighting.

Hope this is informative to everyone. Other things I found out are:

S/W Version ...... 108611V01-12
Engine Hours ..... 585.9
Max RPM .......... 4873 (gotta be climbing to the Eisenhower Tunnel, Vail and/or Wolf Creek passes)
Max Speed......... 81.4 (Definitely going down hill for that!)

Wayne

PS: I haven't smoked anything in over 26 years ...

Wayne, Drive it like you stole it!

You can reset all those values to 0 by the way!

Chassis is a 2005.5 built in aug of 2004, I verified the year by VIN
(looking to see if the color change option is there)

The dash with the occasional issue with half or faded LCD characters... Mine had it.. Damon replaced it when I was there for other reasons (The problem was very nice.. It happened..... On the way to the factory )

If yours was built in August 2004, then it definitely is a MY2005 chassis.

I've been told that the model year change takes place when the UAW assembly line workers resume production after the 4th of July holiday, which is typically an extended holiday period by automotive industry practices. There is no set re-start date, and much is dependant on assy line modifications or re-tooling being done while production is on holiday.

I guess another way to think of this is that the model year ends when the July 4th holiday begins.

Have any of you run into this cluster problem? I have a Pace Arrow 38-P on a W 24 chaise. It was built in 2007 but carried in 2008. While driving on a good road or bad road the turn signals/emergency flashers blink intermittently. Sometimes they'll stop or they'll blind all the time. When they are blinking the outside lights are not lit, only the lights on the dash. I have had the electrical connection checked with no avail. Any information is greatly appreciated.

To provide some belated information on this thread, the instrument cluster was replaced under warranty today at Brazel's. It took about 20 minutes or so for the replacement, but then again, it's always helpful to know what you're doing, and the folks at Brazel's certainly do ...

The only difference I've noticed so far is the word "BRAKE" in red capital letters is used instead of the previous icon when the emergency brake is engaged. So far so good after about a 125 mile drive from Centralia, WA, to Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, OR, just outside Portland.
