In June we purchaced an Infinity 32R with the 8.1 L engine. Wow a lot more power then our old Ford V10.
My question is, should I be using higher octane fuel then regular? It seems to ping a little.
Thanx in advance,
Al Edwards

+1
I run regular in mine, no problems. I was tempted by this in a Kangaroo station near Concord, NC last week, but the price scared me off.

The recommended fuel is 87 Octane "regular" Unleaded. You could try running a mid-grade with slightly higher Octane rating to "see" if that will eliminate the pinging, however, the pinging "may" be an indication of excessive carbon build up, and you "may" get rid of it by running several tankfuls with gas containing a high % of Chevron Techrolene.

The Workhorse rep encouraged the Workhorse Chassis Motorhome Club members to use Techron once a year as a preventative measure at the seminar at our rally last summer in Ohio. Techron Works He said it was the best to clean everything in your fuel system including the combustion chamber. I used 4-5 bottles with a fill up.
Also, using a higher octane rated fuel will not increase power and in fact may lower it.
Good luck,
Dave

I've run the lowest octane for 60,000 miles with no problem.
Used to add 6 cans of Techron to the tank once a year.
I now use Seafoam once a year and I always run the generator when I have the cleaning additive in the tank.

Just to be clear, I did not suggest higher octane would "increase power", but I do believe engines which "need" a higher octane will ping if running on a lower octane. I also believe the ECM program is "susposed to" adjust timing and other parameters to prevent ping, which is usually an audible indication of pre-ignition within the cylinder. NOT a good thing, and I hope the OP can eliminate it. Ed

The Vortec 8.1 is designed to use regular 87 octane, HOWEVER if it is pinging, stepping up a grade may help till you can have it looked at.
Pinging can be caused by several issues. You did not say if you bought it new or used.
Some 'Used" units have been tampered with, (IE: Chipped) and the tampering can cause pinging,, So can some wear and tear issues, wrong spark plugs, and things like that.. So if it is used, Have someone go over the engine, someone who KNOWS that engine please.
