One of my two fan belts self distructed, and I am wondeing if this is a job that I can do myself. O must I pay some dealer $95 per plat rate hiour to do it? Fortunately I have the tools and the time as we will be stationary for a few months

Are you sure there are two belts? I just looked at mine & it appears to be one. Two weeks ago my belt busted (had to be towed---another post here). They replaced one belt. It's a serpantine, I believe. Gates Micro V K061080. I was glad to pay $273 to have a dlr fix it on an emergency basis.
In my case, one half of the belt separated & one half remained, giving me the impression that there were two belts. Then the remaining half busted, and I was in deep doo-doo.
I don't have the tools or cujones to do it myself.

Kayo, it's not that difficult to change the belt, it may help to have another pair of hands helping.. And you only have one belt..
You need a 1/2" rachet in order to release the tension on the belt tensioner..
If you would send me your email address I'll email you a copy of the Workhorse manual page that deals with replacement of the belt..

Yep Chevy Vortec 8.1 only has one belt. Replaced from under MH. We took the dog house cover off. Gives plenty of litgh on engine to see what you are doing.

I replaced mine at 11,000 mikes because it squeaked. I bought a Dayco belt as recommended by a chevy truck dealer and have no problems since. The belt was $43.00. I have to tell you it took us all day to do it. You need at least one person from the top and another from the bottom and both of you better diagrams. It's not that it hard but it is very confusing and there is very little room to get your arms in there. The last part was me sitting in the right wheel well and snapping the idler back in place. We almost couldn't believe we got it. At some point I was reconsidering either having it towed or removing the radiator to get at it. My ego wouldn't let it go. We went for lunch, recruited my teenage daughters skinnier arms and finally got it.
I don't believe one person can do this.

When mine was done. It was by a WCC service center under warranty. Tech worked from the bottom I helped from up on top. Had to hunt up a diagram, which was in one of my manuals.

Let's see: $75/hour times 2 people times 8 hours equals $1200. Seems like my $273 was a bargain, while I sipped a cool one.
