I need to replace the fan on my 2003 W22. I hit a rut in the road and I assume the shroud flexed enough to hit the fan and one blade is missing. I have ordered a new fan from WH and want to try and replace it myself. Has anyone done this and what was involved.
Thanks Don

It takes a special tool as well as a small impact hammer to remove the bolt holding the fan to it's mount. I just recently had this done at a shop and saw the problem that required the special tool. You could probably make the tool if you have access to welding equipment. It has too be thin and hardened and sized to fit the large, I believe, six sided shaft. Otherwise you'll probably need to take it to your local Workhorse repair center.

One other thing... Look to see that there is at least one self tapping screw holding the lower radiator shroud for moving.

Don,
Check the bottom part of the shroud to see if the fan has worn it all the way thru. On our years of W22 the shroud will flex up with high air flow. Once worn all the way thru, it can catch the fan blades and cause breakage. Some iRV2 members have had the fan self destruct and take out the radiator too.
To prevent this, add a self tapping screw in the middle bottom part of the shroud. I used a 1/4 in hex head screw.
Brazels or Redlands RV monitor (and sponsor) this site, maybe they can confirm the special tool required.
Good luck,

Take a look at the following photos of what happened to mine. Developed the small crack you see at the very bottom of the shroud. When I checked the fan to shroud clearance it was just about touching.
I forced the shroud down using the crack to open the gap which provides about a half-inch clearance and drilled and mounted the aluminum strap to keep it at this shape. So far it's worked good.
I could have trimmed the aluminum a bit but didn't really see a need.
I missed the screw Dale added. I will do that also.

Went under mine and a friends 02 W-22 neither had a bolt in the shroud. My shroud was not setting in the left side clip. So will get my excitment level up to a fevered pitch (tomorrow)and put self tapping screws in the shrouds. This forum is a great source. I wouldn't have known I had a potential problem. Thanks for sharring the information. Marv

There should be a list of must do items listed in bold at the start of the forum. Things like the shroud bolt, the grease fitting in the brake rod assembly, wires chafing near the tilt-steering wheel joint, and other I have addressd but forgotten.

Well I crawled under mine and it had a screw in the shroud from the factory - W22 -2003. It was covered by undercoat from the coach manufacturer.

I forgot to mention that I laid there for about 20 minutes drooling over the new Koni shocks. I will get to try them out this weekend.

Well my excitment level is increasing to the point of nearly getting ready to get under and drill a prehole for the self tapping bolt and getting the shroud secured. Now then,is there any possibility that I could drill into the bottom of the radiator? That would be ugly. Thanks Marv
