I have a National Dolphin LX, 6356, 2003 on a W22 chassis. Has anyone personally greased their W22?
I have asked on other forums and was told to look in the manual. The manual only points to general areas of lubrication. I found 8 fittings on front suspension and steering, and one at the spline on drive shaft. Did I miss any? Someone said look for one on the steering universal joint, but haven't checked that yet. A difinitive answer on number of fittings would be appreciated.

mchammer: In addition to the usual front end/steering fittings, you should have one on each universal joint along the drive shaft. Mine are covered with a red rubber "cap" and sometimes I need to rotate the DS a half turn to get at them easily. The Workhorse chassis guide lists 15 "lubrication points" but not all "points" require grease or have zerks, such as the front wheel bearings which are oil filled. Sorry I can't be precise as to the exact quantity of zerks, which I believe was your question. Hopefully another member can give you an accurate count.

I just did a Lub and oil change on our 2004 W22 35U. I lifted the front end with the jacks to take the weight of the King pins. I found 8 zerks on the front and 4 on the drive shaft U joints ( Iliked the little plastic covers on the drive shaft zerks) I replaced the oil filter with the same type as it came with (AC Delco PF 454) All fittings took grease very well using a hand operated grease gun. This is our 6th MH and I found this to be the easyest one yet to work on. Please comment on any thing I may hve missed.

Dick, some say there are zerks on the steering u joints but I haven't looked yet. For some reason I don't like to get under mine with jacks holding it up. Guess I've seen too many hydraulic hoses burst. I built 4 sets if drive on ramps, starting with an 8" wide piece of 3/4 plywood about 4' long and then progressively shorter 2 X 8 cut at a 45 degree angle. I used 3 of them which raises it 5-1/4 inches. Feels much safer.

MC Hammer:
Do you have a W22 Chassis on your coach? On page4-54 of the WorkHorse Owner's manual, Item 1 Steering Column Slip Joint, Remarks: One fitting (Except W22 and W52 Chassis. Item 4: Front Steering Knuckles, One filling each side, lower bushing (except W22 and W52)
The answer to your question would be "No" if you have a W22 chassis.

Thanks Dick, that will save me from hunting them. I think I missed a couple on the driveline U joints, so will go back tomorrow with a flashlight and see if I can find them. Driver, you must have skinny mechanics. I'm 6-3 and weigh 260, so the extra 5 inches I raise mine on the chocks really helps.

The splines should be visible and the zirk fitting is located on the outside of the tube of the female socket that contains the spline. In the lubrication points sheet in the chassis guide this piece is identified as the prop shaft slip joint.

It's there keep looking ...

Thanks for the info on the spline shaft lubrication fitting for W22. I found the spline and female fitting which does not have a zerk fitting. Instead there is a screw on cap on the female fitting. I can unscrew it by hand and will attempt to add grease into it before screwing it back on. Not much room for grease however.
Since my W22 is a 2002 model maybe workhorse added the zerk to later models.

(or is it a plug ??) with a zirk and you should be good to go. You can get zirks from Autozone or Advanced.

Driver,

It is recommended that you take the weight off the front suspension to grease the ball joints etc. If you don't grease wont get to the entire joint. You don't have to raise the wheels off the ground, just lift the suspension to drop the front wheels down to full travel. I would recommend using truck frame stands for safety a pair of 10k stands would be fine.
Also, I use a "creeper" to work under the rig, makes the job MUCH easier.
