W22 would not start

One day after setting for about a month my MH would not start. After exhausted testing I found that the solenoid stud was made of steel and had rusted and lost connection( this is the small wire ). When I went to remove it it broke off. You cannot buy just the solenoid you have to buy the complete starter and this is when the fun began. I have an 05 MH with an 04 W22 chassis and come to find out an 03 engine. The guys at NAPA were a lot of help in finding the correct starter and they had one in stock. As I found out later they also had the bet price. Hope this helps somone.

If there is a nut on that stud (And I think there is) between the wire and the solenoid body and if you are really good at it there is a stud repair kit that NAPA and other auto parts sells.

You remove the nut, thread this thing (Which by the way is brass) on in it's place, then attach the wire to it and you are good to go.

Just thought you'd like to know.

See what I am talking about here: Starter/Solenoid Repair Stud

Also depending on the starter it should be possible to replace the stud, Or you could take the starter assembly to a starter rebuild shop. Would sure beat the price of a new one. and they will use a non-rusting stud.

The stud that broke off is the small one that I beleive is #8 or #10 and the back of the solenoid is pressed togeather and can't be removed without damaging it. Thanks anyway I am a retired career mechanic and beleive me if I could have repaired it I would have. I don't have the connection that I had before to get the nessesary rebuild parts.

Your can replace just the solenoid...
Part #'s
  • 10475646 Starter Solenoid AC Delco
  • SS-906 Starter Solenoid Wells
  • 66-132 Starter Solenoid WAI
  • ST 170 Starter Solenoid NAPA

You will need a Trox socket to remove the solenoid.

The starter I got from NAPA is a part#PME96222 and is identical to the original but NAPA or anyone else could come up with a solenoid for it. The one pictured above is simaler but the pull was a little differant. I have all the tools from before I retired.

That is just a sample photo... I believe the solenoid is the same as one that fits the 5.7 Chevy. I carry a spare in my RV....

AH, not the battery cable as I thought but the control stud.

If there is anything left there are two ways to fix that one.. One is kind of neat (Basically spot welt a wire onto the end of the stud) but the other is much like the main stud repair, only smaller.
