I'm sure Mike is correct. It is definitely more than an alarm clock which only measures time, or an odometer which only measures distance travelled.
We have been told here in the forums and elsewhere that the GM
Oil
Life
Monitoring system contains a set of alogorithims which
calculate "when" an oil change is required based on a set of actual engine conditions such as time at idle, RPMs, min & max temperature achieved, operating hours, etc. It does not have the ability to "test" the oil, or verify any oil quality issues, but rather is a
calculation of what the oil's condition should be (assuming the recommended oil and viscosity is being used) after being used under the moinitored operating parameters.
However, because it is "only" a calculation of a theory about the oil condition, I certainly do NOT wait on my OLM to tell me "when" I need to change my oil. IMO, fresh oil and a clean filter is one of the cheapest forms of PM. I won't drive mine more than 4,000 miles between oil changes, and I've had to change my oil while overnighting in a CG several times.
