I attended the Workhorse Chassis Club rally in Union City and this issue was addressed by the maintenance department head. He indicated that 1 quart/1K miles is not unusual.

The July 2005 issue of the WH Chassis guide dedicates one entire page to oil consumption (PG 48). It addresses High Speed or High RPM operation, Towing, PCV system operation, Oil dilution from condensation and how to measure consumption. Here's one sentence from the guide.

"Oil consumption is often more related to duty cycle than mileage. A good GM guideline is one quart per 100 gallons of fuel used."

Frankly, that sounds like a lot to me but that's what they say.

if Alan says that's what it is, then that's what it is. I hope you had a good time in Union City.

I have heard some real horror stories about oil consumption on the 8.1. When I look at the driving habits of the owners, I suspect that could be the reason.

I consider myself a "conservative" driver. I set the cruise control at 2000 rpm on the freeways. On my Fall and Spring round trips between AZ and WA (about 1600 miles) I use a pint of oil. I consider that acceptable.

3 qts in 5400 mi. I drive like wa7hra and think heavy feet burn oil. 3400 rpm max for me. Ultrapower or not, I'll crawl over xtreme mtns.

Feel free to take a look at my copy. I keep it there so I can quickly refer to it while on the road.

Send a message via AIM to oemtech
Check the Allison TSB 1099B as it has all the info necessary on part numbers and service intervals. If you can't find it email me and I will send you a copy. Don't use PM as I can not attach a file.
