I'm considering changing my own tie rod boot covers but not really sure what socket size is needed to remove the tie rod nut. Any information would be appreciated

I see that's you're pretty new on the forum so welcome....again.
You will be much better off to use a caliper and do your own measuring. Or you could try different sockets to find a good fit.

I'm thinking the real problem is where are you going to find just the rubber cover itself?

If you are committed to doing this level of work you are also going to need a pickle fork and a good size mallet. OR the proper tool the J 6627-A. The tool looks like a C clamp with a bevel and a hex nut on the bottom. Fitting the tool and tightening the nut will pop the tie rod end.
I have found torque specs but not the size of the nut itself. I'd have to grab some open end wrenches and go and try it.

I guess I'm going to have to rethink that to I've been away from the repair business too long, thanks.

don't they make a split type rubber boot so you do not have to drop the tie rod?

Bigdaddy,
Wouldn't a sharp "exacto" type knife do the trick? You could change them occassionally that way with no problem- They are not designed to hold any type of pressure anyway.
