Received a Scangauge II for Xmas. I was curious what systems others monitor while traveling.

I "usually" have mine set to display engine coolant temp, tranny oil temp, MPH, and then I use the 4th position to roam things like intake air temp, RPMs, and check on oil life remaining %. FWIW, I find the digital MPH to be several "off" from where the pointer seems to be pointing.

For others who have a SGII, can you tell me what % yours displays immediately after you reset the Oil Life monitor?? Thanks, ED

I usually monitor Cylinder head temperature, tranny oil temperature, Average MPG, and use the 4th for instantaneous MPG, MPH, intake air temp, HP, etc.

I set the Scan Gauge for Engine Temperature, Transmission Temperature, Volts, RPM
I move the Volts and RPM to monitor the Entering air temp to the mass air sensor and various items that I feel I would want to look at. Since the Temp gauge is welded in the middle position I like to see the water temps rise and fall.
The volt read out on mine normally shows 14.2 or 14.3, the Scan Gauge will read much higher

The RPM I like to monitor in hilly and mountainous areas.

Not to big on the trip functions but I do use them occasionally

Normally use green and blue color

George,

I monitor coolant temp, trans oil temp, throttle position sensor and horsepower or load. The throttle position sensor helps me ease into the throttle and monitor when to kick it out of cruise on hills to prevent or delay kickdown. The horsepower reading is just "fun"...

Why do you say this?

My dash gauge rises and falls almost in lock step with my ScanGauge, but I do monitor the temp with my ScanGauge because it does show the actual temp in degrees

My temperature gauge is not at all welded to the middle position I often see it rise and fall in the gauge but that is not the experience of a great many owners.

The middle position on the gauge displays a normal range and once the engine is in that normal range the needle hovers in that range and pretty much stays there. Is it a bad thing? Not really. If my needle is in the middle I'm good with that. If I need to know the exact degree, I'll look at the SG.

The ballistics of the temperature gauge were designed to behave like that because whether it's high, mid or low normal it's all "normal".

With a 8.1 Vortec engine how do you monitor tranny temp? and what temp do you monitor. Discharge oil from transmission, Oil from cooler, transmission housing temp?

Jim, Do you have a 5 speed or a 6 speed? You can monitor your tranny temp with a Scan Gauge II that info comes from the computer. I can't put my finger on exactly where the sensor is but I expect that it is internal to the Allison Transmission and is derived from the output of the TCM which is input to the ECM and then output to the ODBII port.

I have the five speed, so I just plug into the engine computer port by the steering wheel?
Sounds way too simple.

Jim, Yes sir that's all there is to it! Now you are going to need the X-Gauge Scan Gauge II and Oemy can hook you up with that and program it before he sends it to you. You're going to look for TFT and that will gibe you that information.

Seems that everyone monitors engine and transmission temperatures.
The other two spots are quite varied. Guess we will have to try a few and see which others we like best. Thanks for your input.
