I finally figured out the differential I have is a gm 14t in the 1992 allegro bay the wife and I just purchased. I want to check everything out before we use it so I went for the rear brakes first. Found the correct socket at napa to remove the wheel bearing locknut and removed the hub.
Whoever replaced the bearing seaks the last time distorted the seal and it was leaking slightly.
The wheel bearings dont look that great either so I'll replace them but, I'm not having much luck finding the specs or proceedure for tightening the rear bearings.
It also looks like the pinion seal is begining to leak a bit.
Anyone have experience with this differential?
Thanks.
Ed

I have a lot of experiance with this and its the same as a front wheel bearing. Tighten while turning the hub untill you get a good amount of drag and the back off till the drag goes away. I beleive the technical way is to tighten the nut to 25ft lbs and back off 2 flats on the nut. I prefer the old fashion way because ther are too many variables on torqueing the nut. As far as the pinion is consurned when replacing the seal torque the nut to 125ft.lbs with a new locking nut. On older units the area the seal rides on is as important as the seal itself so inspect it real good. You may need to get seal with new wear sleeves. don't for get to refill you diff. when your done and I always like to tilt it bothe way to let the oil run into the bearing area before I took it for a drive.
