I need your help. I'm trading out of my 3rd Windsport for a Newmar, I've had 2 '05s and an 06 Workhorse w20. I'm wondering if any of the 03-06 chassis were better than others. We are looking at 37 Mountain Air, hopefully with 22's and the 6 speed. Any tips ?

teamwally: WELCOME to iRV2.com You have come to the right place for RV info. Please allow me to answer your questions, as a Newmar owner and Workhorse fanatic.

The early W-22 chassis were the best thing available to Newmar at the time, and the MACA coaches built back then were really nice, but HEAVY. Depending on model, some had very little CCC, before your stuff was added. Then WCC came out with the W-24 and the MACA was a better fit for it. For a couple of years (06-07, I think) Newmar used the W-25.5 which should have offerred even better CCC, but then the coaches were increased to 39 feet, so the net gain may not have been much. For 2008+ there is no MACA, however its replacement "Grand Star" is available on the W-24.

IMO, you should avoid a MACA built on the W-22 unless you really don't want to carry much. ANY of the W-24 or W25-5 based coaches should be wonderful. Good luck with your search, and thanks for joining us here on iRV2.com. ED

The Allison 6-speed came out on the W-22's in 2006.

Also, keep in mind that the pre-2004 W-22's are having some brake caliper problems, causing the brake pads to stick causing overheating problems and big bucks to the consumer to repair. Look at recent posts here for descriptions.

The W-24's haven't had any brake issues reported

Teamwally,
I'm a VERY happy owner of a 2006 MACA/W-24. No problems with the chassis and very little with Newmar's part. Bought our's new(had it built), 11/08/05. We are full-time and 27,000 miles and wouldn't have wanted a different coach/chassis combo. DAVE

I have a Dec 03 W22 chassis and 04 model year coach. I have not had any major problems hat I could not fx on my own. The Actia IP cluster has been replaced twice.

I would go for a W24 and Allison 6 sp. Newmar is a great coach.

Oemtech,
Oh Yeah, I had to change my dash cluster too. It was such an easy do, I had forgotten all about it. DAVE
