Anyone else experiencing this? Or, is it normal?

I have an '05 Fleetwood Bounder on a Work Horse Chassis. When I first took delivery, my wife and I started a trip from California to Yellowstone. Some God awful place in southern Idaho a warning appeared on the dash that I was low on engine oil. I was in a town so I was able to immediately get oil. Ever since that incident I have noticed that the coach consumes about a quart of oil every thousand miles.

any help?

Considering that you have traveled 1,000 miles, and let's say that you are getting 7MPG; that yields about 142 gallons of gas. Normal oil consumption would be 1.428 quarts of oil per 1,000 miles so I would estimate that you are slightly ahead of the curve and well within normal oil consumption expectations.

Thanks for the question.

I also think it is in how some of drive these MH's. I for one will on ly use the cruise control on flat roads. I feel I am smarter than the Cruise control when it comes to making a grade and which gear to use. I live in the hill country so I feel I have a good feel for it.

Forgot to mention. I use 1/2 to 1 QT in 3000 miles.

Gee, I wonder why WH would say it's normal to burn oil? So they don't have to fix it? Mine might need fixing because it only burns about a 1/2 qt in 1500 miles. It's the only vehicle I've owned for the past 10 or 15 years that I have to add oil between changes.

I'm one of the fortunate few. So far, I have not added any oil between oil changes. Almost 25,000 miles.

From my experience, it sounds pretty normal. Our workhorse is going on 3 1/2 years old now and its approaching 25,000 miles. We take a couple trips a year to central Florida and the round trip is about 1200 miles. I usually add a quart of oil during the trip. Going out west where there are mountain grades causes us to burn a bit more oil at times.

Last time I looked Workhorse doesn't design engines.

I've mentioned this before but it may be worth repeating. In Oct. I drove from NH to Steamboatm Springs, CO., than on to Florida via the great South West. I added one qt at 5000 miles into the trip which brought the level well over full. I arrived at my winter home in Florida with just over 5400 miles on the trip meter. I was still over full on oil.

I changed oil/filter and on my trip home I travled just under 2500 miles and the level was perhaps 1/4 qt below full. SOOOO, they don't all burn oil.

I use Moble 1, always tow my Jeep Wrangler, and drive 65, perhaps slightly more at times. I also have the ECM mods and my own design C.A.I.

No burn at all since I changed to 10w30 Quakerstate Advanced full syn. Used Mobil 1 before and burned about 1.5 quarts per 2,000 miles driven... Very, very pleased with QSFS!

Oh my friend Driver, don't take it personal. And your're right, it's not built by Workhorse. It still pretty convenient for Chevy and Workhorse to say burning oil is normal, much better for them than rebuilding engines. And It's true that I have'nt had to add oil in any other vehicle I've owned since my '73 Duster.
I'm sure burning some oil contributes to the black exhaust pipes too.
Burning oil is not PC any more, that's why the 2 cycle engines are almost obsolete.
I wonder if this has something to do with why the 8.1 is being discontinued.
There's been a lot of good heavy equipment and truck engines discontinued just because they could'nt get them to pass the emission standards that continue to get more difficult to pass.

I just completed a 4800 mile trip and used 1 quart, and I do have a black exhaust pipe.

This is what makes the 8.1L attractive in a chassis like the UFO. There's no need to go the 07/08 emissions routine using ULSD if you stay with gas. The 8.1L is a great little motor.

The black deposits in the pipes is not so much due to oil consumption as much as a chimney stack effect where the exhaust gasses cool down and get deposited on the sidewalls of the pipes. I'm sure that everything that comes down stream would add to the deposits however I'm not putting too much emphasis on it all being motor oil.

I do like the post from Ed/Full-time and will probably go out and look for QSFS for my next oil change. I believe I will continue to use the M1-111 filter unless something better comes across the counter at the parts store. I already have a new Hastings waiting in the wings.
