Workhorse GM 8.1L Gas

Curious what octane gas most use in the 8.1L engine. I generally try to use at lease mid grade (87 octane) and occasionally will use premium when traveling in high altitude/hills demanding more power.
Also routinely will use seafoam treatment after every oil change...Has anyone experimented with octane booster?

I run 87 octane, I did use some 85 or 86 octane in the mountain states (Wyoming) a couple of years ago, which resulting on some light knocking, so I added in some premium at the next town to bring the average up, and used mid-grade 87 or 88 for the rest of that trip.

87 here too. That's the low grade around here. I think that is the minimum recommended octane for the 8.1.

I also top off with ethanol free when I know it will be in storage since it is available local. Use ethanol free when I run across it while traveling...

I believe the owner manual states that 87 octane is the preferred gas to use. I agree, when traveling in mountains, I will upgrade to 89 octane. Especially if I'm towing my toad. But, here in Texas and flat land I throttle back to 87 octane. No need to waste money, when not necessary.

I had to chuckle to myself when I read this. I thought that’s why I bought an RV and boat.
But I guess they are both necessary for ones sanity.
Cheers friends.

To the OP.
I use nothing but 87. No problems noted to date.

I use the lowest grade where ever I am. I can't tell any difference.

Once a year I add five cans of Seafoam before a trip when I know I'll burn the whole tank. During that trip I will run the generator for at least an hour.

So far so good after 14 years and 90,000 miles.

I always run regular, even in the mountains where the octane may be 85 or 86 due to the altitude. Never had it ping.

It is designed to run on regular. Anything higher is wasting beer money.
I do run Top Tier gas as much as I can. Pilot/Flying J is crap gas.

87 octane, I try to fill up at a Costco if nearby. Usually $0.20 per gallon cheaper than any gas in the area. Makes a difference when your buying 50-65 gallons. I use Lucas Fuel Treatment occasionally when filling up. Flagstaff is the closest to mountainous terrain I have been in, only had the RV for a year.

87 only now.

Tested mid-grade and high-test including at high altitudes and found no benefit.
The ECM seems to adapt to it and the engine did not act any differently.
