I was doing the same. In discussions with my Father in Law, he went to the garage and got me a tarp strap. I am always amazed at how simple a solution can be! Lol.

My lower shroud has at least 1/4" clearance But less than I 'd like. I have removed the two "S" shaped spring clips that support the lower shroud before I reattached the shroud bottom. I expect by adding the spacers, I will have a safe margin of clearance. My new upper and lower shroud halves are attached with 2 screws on each side.
I also cut the shrouds' side pieces into two parts on each side and riveted them to their respective shroud edges to insure they cant fall off or get sucked in. This procedure also makes shroud installation much easier.

Sounds like a good idea. As soon as my duct tape wears out I just might replace it with rivets

GREAT idea using the rivets. Wish I had thought of that! I took my seals off and used the plenum tape. If that fails I will use the rivets.

Found this photo of lower shroud after riveting side pieces. Remainder of side pieces were riveted to top shroud in same way. Forgot to photo that!

I wonder why Workhorse didn't think of that
Thanks,

Today was the first trip after repair with tarp strap "spacers". We drove about 100 miles, some small grades. There are NO strange noises from the engine compartment. I will crawl under and inspect when we get back home in a week. I think it is fixed!

Is this problem showing up on certain years, or are the shrouds the same thruout all years? I have an 07 Southwind 32V, probably on an 06 Chassis....W-22. Thanks

Mine is a 03 on a 02 chassis. I have read about 01, 02 & 03 issues. Beyond that I don't know. It is easy to slide under and take a look. Mine had a hole worn through the bottom half. Good luck!

A few things to look for.
Make sure the top shroud hasn’t slipped out or about to slip out from under the bolts at the top of the shroud. Check the bolts. They are hard or may be impossible to get to.
Make sure the bottom shroud is secured to the frame. If not (some weren’t) add a couple of self tapping screws.
Make sure your shroud has these side skirts that seal the gap between the left and right sides of the shroud and radiator tanks. I believe you can purchase these or fabricate them as some here have done.
See my shroud replacement photos.

F-T's picture clearly shows what I found wrong on my Shroud.--
The mounting screw locations are mis - aligned from the pre punched retainer holes in the upper radiator support frame. This has resulted in the entire shroud,(top and bottom halves), being offset, by 1/2" in my case, toward the drivers' side of the center line of the radiator.
Because of this, the right side shroud side piece does not contact the right side radiator tank sufficiently to prevent it from eventually getting sucked into the fan blade. This has happened three time during the life of my rig.
After discovering this misalignment, I removed all the shrouds and installed three nut clips to fit into the upper radiator support frames' unused holes.
Then I modified the side pieces as described/shown in posts 6,16, and 19 of this thread.
Reinstalling the shrouds with better centering now places the two side parts more uniformly on the radiator tanks. I suspect the rivets I used would not be needed now except for the reason of easier installation. see my posts earlier in this thread.
Having seen two cases now, I suspect there are many more assembled the same way! This may have been something related only to 2003 production?? or more? who knows??
Others may want to check the same areas described here if their side pieces are missing..or do not appear centered.

Looked at my shroud on my 07 W-22 yesterday. There's a screw and a couple of clips across the bottom. The shroud seemed to be solidly mounted, no movement. I could put a finger between the shroud and the fan blades. All looked good to me. It appears that perhaps this problem was corrected sometime prior to 07, from reading the posts on here, most appear to be 2003 or so. Thanks for the info.

tarp strap spacers
We have about 1000 miles in the "tarp strap / premium tape" repair. I crawled under yesterday and everything is as I left it. No contact, no movement. The temp gauge is running about 1 grad lower than before, but I also replaced some of the cool pack rubber curtain that was missing under the hood. The floor area does seem a little warmer though. I will watch the shroud, but all seems well.

With all this talk of shrouds shredding in multiple threads I took the time to check mine out while I was changing the oil, filter and lubing the chassis. I had about an 1/8" from the tip of the fan to my lower shroud . There was no evidence that it had ever touched though. This is on a chassis with only 20K miles.
I ended up installing a screw in the center between the two clips on the lower shroud piece. After doing so I tested the holding ability by pulling up on the shroud to see if there was any movement and determined that the screw was doing it's job quite well. The upper shroud piece looked in good condition and I was able to place a finger between the shroud and fan so I was good with that.
This is one item I will end up looking at each time I do the oil change to prevent it from self destructing. Thanks for sharing this info!
