Our recently purchased 2004 Fleetwood with WH chassis is in to the dealership, for repairs that we found during our first cruise out, including ABS sensor light continuiously on (we did 8 hour shakedown cruise and it stayed on the whole time) . The service ctr. said that we fall into the recall category, but the repair facility can't work on the RV before our planned 2week road trip. I'm nervous. First time Class A owners, driving out from Mass. to SD and back. ABS light on. And our reg. mechanic had told us to get brakes and calipers checked before we go, but the dealership said not to have them do anything, because it might void the recall notice. I'm wondering if we should postpone the trip. What do you experienced folks think?

For answers abut the brake recall and some things you can do to minimize your exposure, click here Brake Recall Resource Center

Having your ABS sensor problems fixed now will not void anything about the recall, but if a sensor has been melted, your chassis may have already suffered a brake lockup.

I had a ABS light and I cleaned the sensors and reset them. Now all works fine and no brake problems.

I've had 3 failures with my 2004 chassis. Dont be fooled, those brakes can fail at any time. Good luck

Here is a link to Oemy's tech tip page.
Click on #8. ABS Sensor.

Oemy's Web Site - Tech Tips

They are easy to clean, just be sure to push them back in all the way.

Last November 2009 at about 24,000 miles I too had an ABS light come on. We were on a trip so when I stopped for the night at a campground I checked the sensors. All looked okay except the left rear one. When I pulled it out it looked like it had been hitting the cogs on the notched gear. I cleaned it real good, and reinstalled. I've not had it come on since, and I'm at 28,400 miles.

It certainly wouldn't void the recall notice. You might ask them to pay your mechanic to do the work, including bleeding the brake fluid which should be done for sure.

John, In my opinion, Workhorse will not pay a private mechanic to accomplish any recall tasks "unless" it is pre-authorized by calling the Workhorse Roadside Assistance number 877-946-7731.

Bleeding the brake fluid will not accomplish very much however flushing and replacing the fluid would be another matter altogether. That service alone is not covered under the terms of the Interim Repair Notice unless the service center accomplishes it as a routine function of their service policy. Our local service center told me from now on, "I will completely flush any job that comes in here in regard to brakes." Now that's how it's done!

Any work that may be done any where by anyone will not void the work that is required to be accomplished under the terms of the recall. If you change your own or have someone else do it as a customer pay, the owner is still eligible to have the recall completed.

Your family is more important than a vacation, if your truly worried about the break recall then I would FIX the brakes then do the vacation. Reading some of the posts and the recall notice it appears to me that the brakes should be fixed, and certified as OK before you go an do heavy driving.

Just my thoughts. Good Luck!

I have a 2004 Gulfstream on a W22 workhorse. I have had brake failure two different times and Workhorse replaced all four Calipers, seals and ABS sensors. Even though I have had this done I still have problems when ever I get into an area where there is a lot of stop lights that I have to stop at, one after the other. When I smell the brakes I pull over and let things cool off for 20 or 30 min. Then I can continue on. The problem at this time even though you have the calipers replaced you are still going to get the defective calipers. It will not cure your problem. The first thing I would do if find out if one of the ABS sensers is melted or could be just a dirty one. If it is melted you know it is because of sticky calipers. This is something we have to live with until Workhorse finally does the right thing and I am beginning to think that is a pipe dream for thay have put us off for several years now and we still are no closer to a real fix.

Yes the ABS system should be repaired. I am confused when it comes to "Fixing" the system. Until Workhorse completed the recall nothing will be "Fixed".

Fred, You may have a defective, dirty or out of adjustment sensor. That situation is easily resolved.

DriVer, I was advising the OP to fix his ABS issure, but that would not cure the main brake issue WH owners are experiencing.
