1992 Ford tranny will not shift into OD
I went through this last year, but will revisit it in case someone new has some ideas .
I have a 1992 holiday rambler with ford 460 power ( 40k miles). the transmission will not shift into OD going down the highway . when you take your foot off the gas pedal ( at 60 mph) the trans will shift into OD. When the trans shifts into OD this way , I can push the (OD OFF DASH BUTTON) button repeatedly and the trans shifts in and out of OD, but as soon as I touch the gas pedal ( even 1/4 ") it is back to 3rd . rpm runs ( in 3rd) @ 3400 rpm @ 60mph and when it shift into OD (foot OFF the gas ) rpm drops to 2600 .( rpms are approx watching rpm gauge )
I have replaced trans oil (syn)& filter. and replaced the TPS twice , second time genuine ford part. I made sure TPS was installed slightly ccw and then aligned the holes ..I checked the voltages on the TPS and they are right on .
I am at a loss . any ideas ??????
It gets tween 7 and 8 mpg ( canadian .) as is .
I bought from fella living in it for 8 years . and have put 5,000 miles on it so far.
thanx
Merv

This is something my 36 f 350 has been doing lately and I just noticed mice have eaten through some of the vacuum lines. Have a good look at all you vacuum lines or put a vacuum test gauge on and take for a ride. Look for low vacuum on acceleration.

hey thanks .. I was told that this was a electronic trans and that vacuum had nothing to do with overdrive .
But I sure will pull the woof-house and check the vacuum lines ...
thanx again

Just thinking out loud (or on the key board) but what happens when you press on the gas peddle? The TPS signal changes and the MAP signal changes. Did you test the TPS signal at the ECM? Maybe a wiring problem. Is there a good vacuum signal to the MAP? Could the MAP be defective? If all the above are positive, I would suspect the ECM is faulty.
You are correct, there are no vacuum lines to the tranny.

But damaged/missing vacuum lines can cause the engine to run lean. This will result in low power, so you have press the go pedal further down. The computer sees the pedal further down and delays the shifts.
If the engine is down on power upshifts will be delayed and downshifts will be much too easy to get. This sounds like what you have.

Thanx Mark . I think it has good power, but then, it was like this when I bought it , so I have no idea if power is up to snuf or not . Its seems to start moving ok , ( but when I bought it , it had bad fuel pump . Took 18 hrs to go 500 miles ) and if I compare now ( with new pump) to the trip home === my only comparison is BAD. I have a gm master mechanic helping me on the weekend and I will print all help messages and review with him .
thanx Guys - keep em coming

Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. It will be connected to the intake manifold by a vacuum line.

I got a OBD1 reader from Innova electronics corp
hooked it up just now . guess it does the KOEO test and displays results
code came up ---111-10-628
their code book says the code 628 means "excessive converter slippage" ...
test conditions "O, C" .....
This scares the h outa me
sounds to me like the tranny is hooped ....
am I right ???????????????
and as a post note ---Is this causing the : "not going into OD"
problem ??????

Code 62 means there was slip detected when the converter is locked and the trans is in fourth gear. Often it's due to a failing torque converter. Sometimes it's a false code. I recommend clearing the code and see if it comes back. If it comes back quickly, then there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

It's a symptom, not the cause. The codes sets when the ratio of engine speed to axle speed does not match.

Does your transmission have a kickdown cable? A friend had the same problem on a similar year Lincoln. I found the plastic piece that connects the kickdown cable to the carburetor linkage was broken and the cable was not being operated by the throttle pedal.
