Before you do that, take your VIN # to any Ford Dealer and ask them if the CC recall applies to you, and has it been done.

Try changing the CCS1 ( cruise control cancel ) switch, out on or near the master cylinder.

Over 5 years, I had 2 fail. The first symptom was it not engaging when I hit the set button. After a minute or so of pushing the button, it would set.

I narrowed it down to only acting up after I hit the brakes.

Once it started working, It would work fine until the next time I used the brakes. Sometimes I would tap the brakes and it would work again.

The switch is $25 at most auto parts stores. Its part # is CCS1.lClick image for larger version

You can unplug the switch and test it with a multi meter.

I think the switch is closed with brake off. Set the meter in diode testing and listen to it beep, and then apply the brake. If it has a delay when you let off the pedal, its bad.

I took my 2000 F53 switches apart and cleaned them, probably the same as yours.

Randolpho's is a 2000. Should look just like yours, he was just posting in a thread about a 1995.

I had no CC when I bought my 99 F53, and after lengthy troubleshooting following Ford's manual procedure, it came down to the steering wheel buttons. Easy to replace, nothing obviously wrong with them, and although they are $300 at Ford dealership, I found them on eBay for just over $30.

Hi
My invoice says: SW5926 Cruise Control Switch. I have checked their website and they don't show any, and eBay doesn't find any either.
VERY IMPORTANT: does your horn work? If it doesn't work, that's the first thing you have to fix. That's what the Ford manual says as the first step in troubleshooting the cruise control problem, and now I know that is true. Don't ask how I know. After fixing the horn, I found the problem was indeed the switches on the steering wheel. It would be worth for you to search with wrecking yards first.
If you need the troubleshooting procedure I can send it to you.
Dan
