The starter has gone out on my MH and I was wondering how hard it is to replace.
Are there shims involved or just bolt it on, it has Banks headers, is that good or bad as far as getting to starter.
Anyone have an idea how much one of these starters cost or how long it would take a mechanic to replace it?
Any info appreciated.

Forgot to add this.
The reason I think it is the starter and not the starter relay is I crawled underneath and tapped on the starter with a hammer and it started right up.
I would think this rules out the starter relay.
Right or wrong?
Thanks.

Checking on-line they seem to range between $50 and $165. I would think 1 hour of labor. Does it start normally now that you tapped it with the hammer?

Just replaced mine. I have an '04, with the front panhard bar, and Banks headers.
I've had it out a few time (when I pulled the trans), so I know how to do it, but it just takes a few minutes. Three 10mm bolts to the trans, and two nuts for the wires. I used a deepwell socket and 6" extension to get the ratchet clear of the starter.
I needed one NOW so I got one retail at Autozone. Their DuraGold new one with a lifetime warranty. It was about $175. I would have liked to get a Motorcraft one, but couldn't find one in stock, no telling who makes it anyway.
I was surprised mine went bad. It's near the headers, but not that close, and I have a heat shield (an OEM piece from some unknown other Ford product). It never gave me any trouble until it flat wouldn't start.

It wouldn't start this morning, no matter what I did.
So called local mobile repair, 2 guys came out, tested it, showed me that it wasn't the relay on the firewall, removed starter, went to NAPA and got a new one and came back and installed it. Works great.
All this happened in 2 hours. They charged me $200 plus parts, 2 guys for 2 hours on a Sat. morning, I felt that was as fair price.
Was on the road by 11:30 am.
What can I say, you play you pay. Welcome to the world of RV'ing.
Just another adventure.

I want the names and addresses of the ''two guys'' that came out and fixed your MH. Just in case mine falls apart in their area. You were very luckey...... I changed mine (starter) myself, in the rain, laying in a puddle at Auto Zone in ''Bent Fork'' Oklahoma. that was real fun. Not a big job but kinda wet and a little hot on your hands.......
God bless our troops

They came out with some pretty heavy duty looking equipment, and told me they do mostly diesel semi-truck repair,
but also do RV diesel and gas mechanical too. No coach or appliance repair.
They treated me fairly so I will recommend them.
