Question 2005 F-450 V10 Issues

Looking at a 2005 Fleetwood Tioga 31M with 26K. Looking at the paperwork, in 2009 we saw a bill for over 8K. It was diagnosed as three pistons being damaged. The entire engine was removed. Weighing pros and cons of such engine work. The engine work was done at about 13K miles so about another 13K were put on since 2009.

Very rare for these V10 to have issues as you have listed.
Many people report 100,000 miles and more with no issues.
Since you have seen copy of the repair did you take note if they:
Replaced with Short Block ( Best choice ) or did the shop rebuild original.
IMHO I would look at another if you can not confirm how the repair was handled.

Did find out some more. This is from the invoice.

Vehicle acts like it is choking. Compression Test-#2 Cylinder Low - Remove right valve cover to inspect for broken valve springs-Ok. Removed Engine and Disassembled. Found #2, 4, and 10 pistons damaged. Installed Long block and road tested heard noise from converter.

Bill was a little over $7500. Parts were listed at $4775, labor $2125, sublet repairs $240 plus some misc stuff.

Remanufactured or New long block is a good think. Do you know the source of the long block? Any warranty remaining? Very uncommon to have such a severe failure. Bad to have this in the history. Good it has some miles since the repair.

We don't know the source of the long block. We've kept this rig in mind while still looking at others. If we did pursue, others recommended the same thing, seeing if there was a warranty on the engine.

As stated having a "long block is a good thing. That means that not just the three bad pistons were replaced but (not the original block) but an entire block was gone through completely with new bearings and all other necessary items. That also means it was done at a facility/shop that specializes in engine rebuilding.

You have two methods of ascertaining the quality of the rebuild. The first method is there are already 13,000 miles on the rebuild. That's good news. If a rebuild has some issues they would have surfaced within those 13,000 miles.

Now the second method is to check the color of the existing oil. If it is a bit dirty then it has not been changed recently and your next step would be to have the oil analyzed. That would be a very good thing to have done. If the oil is clean then perhaps checking the oil quality won't do much because there may not be enough miles to indicate wear since the last oil change.

I do know the oil can be analyzed but I'm not an expert or that familiar with the labs. Black Stone Labs is one company. Just Google the phrase and give them a call. Tell them what you are doing and they will advise you on your next step. It's also not expensive maybe $30 to $50.

You will need a sample of the engine oil. If the owner is reluctant to give you one there's your answer. You could just ask them if you can have the oil changed on the chance that you will buy it and also tell them you want to have it analyzed. Spend the money to have it done. Get your sample and find out if it's in good shape.

An oil analysis from Blackstone is a good idea. You can request a test kit, that is a sample bottle and form for free, and since it can take a few days to get, you could have on hand. I think this is about as good a way to evaluate an engine as there is. Good luck on finding the perfect machine for your family!

Thanks for the info. Still looking but still on the list. We found another one, a 2011 (F-450) with 100K on it. I think I'll start another post on that one.

We just lost a 2014 Ford v10 in a 2015 Coachmen Encounter due to a fist sized hole in the block after 5,324 miles. Think I pushed it a little hard on a 2% grade in Virginia on Hwy 460. 3 weeks later and we are still waiting on warranty Short block but I do have a piece of connecting rod and piece of piston for my collection.
