Thanks for that... now I have some idea of what to expect. BTW, nice Bay Star you have there!

DHart-Great question-I looked at a Winnebago Aspect this week, has the V10, same 22K total weight. 5000 lb capability. Went over this a great deal with a guy who knows as much about this as anyone i know. As long as you do not exceed the 5000 toad, and total weight of coach, with gear, gas, etc, totally loaded does not exceed 22K, including the toad, he said I was good to go. Will tow a Wrangler that weighs 4250. My weight when arriving at dealer gave me 2400 lbs for load and I will not approach that.

Thanks, SeniorRover.

We just began our Maiden Voyage with the Bay Star 32' and Rubicon Hard Rock.

Our Wrangler Rubi is probably as heavy as they come, due to the steel bumpers and skid plates, and we upgraded to 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers, which weigh about 80# each. I wouldn't be surprised if our Wrangler is pushing upper 4xxx# in weight.

Traveling today for a few hours, we were surprised at how effortless the drive was with the new Bay Star and Wrangler. Of course, we had little in the way of hills to deal with and I know that when we face some big hills, the speed will decrease and the revs and noise will increase. Still, I don't think we will have a problem with that.

My Class A frame of reference is a 2011 HR Endeavor 44' DP with tandem axle. That was an awesome coach. Surprisingly, today we were very happy with how well the 2016 Bay Star gasser V-10 performed in terms of quietness, ride, and power. Of course it was not as quiet, nor as powerful as our 44' DP, but it performed quite nicely nonetheless.

I know that the mountains will be more demanding, but we're ok with putting up with less speed and power given the significantly smaller and lighter weight package that the Newmar 32' Bay Star presents. After having the 44' DP, this 32' gasser feels like driving a minivan. And it is so easy to get in and out of places that I never would have attempted with the 44' DP. When we give up some things, we gain other things, in return.

DHart has a Class A that the combined weight of the MH and toad has a limit of 26K not 22K. The weight of his coach alone has a limit of 22K.

I should point out that the Aspect is a Class C MH and the combined weight of the Class C MH and toad cannot exceed 22K. The weight of the Aspect alone has a limit of 14.5K.

Big difference in weight limits between DHart's Class A and the Class C that you were looking at.

Aauummm... Thanks for that additional information. My coach does indicate a maximum towing capacity of 5000#. But the weight chart inside my kitchen cabinet doesn't show GCVWR, though I'm sure that info is available in the coach paperwork. It does show the GVWR and CCC.

You're welcome. The GCWR is not easily found. The Ford spec sheets for the F-53 chassis has it and it's also listed in the specifications on the Newmar website and in their brochures.

Also, if a MH were weighed to be 20K actual weight on a 22K chassis, then they could pull a 6K toad and they'd be at 26K which would be within the GCWR.

Yep, but probably shouldn't tip the scales at anything more than 21K on the MH alone, fully loaded. That way he could pull a 5K toad and then the total weight would not exceed the 26K GCWR.

Thanks. I confirmed your numbers on the Newmar website. Looks good. By my estimation, we're at about 20,100 on the coach, fully loaded with our stuff full water and propane tanks, and 4900# high estimate on the Jeep, for a total of 25,000. About 1000# under GCVWR. Looks like a reasonably good situation between coach and Jeep.

Did some hills today which brough the RPMs up to 3250 when the coach kicked down from overdrive to 5th and then 4th. A bit noisy, of course, compared to my 44' DP, but the engine thrives on revs and has no problem with it. Very little engine noise at 2000 RPM and 60 mph on the freeways. Not the power nor the quiet running of the DP, but we're loving the 32' form factor. And this floorplan gives us almost what we had with the 44', just without a lot of extra space/length that we didn't really need nor want any more. It's a give and take equation. We enjoyed the 44' DP when we had it and now, we're enjoying the 32' Newmar similarly. Either way, not a bad way to travel!

Made a wrong turn in Jackson Hole WY and ended up going over the
Teton Pass. About as steep as you will find out West. Made it fine just not real fast. V10 was wound to 5k but had no problem with overheating or anything. Probably won't take that road again but at least I know we can do it if we had to. That was also before I installed the 5Star upgrade which I know has made a big difference in the shifting and some increase in hp and tq. You'll be fine, just learn to enjoy the trip and the view. Headed to Utah next month for three weeks to see the 5 big parks so expect we will get to test the 5Star upgrade on some mountains there.
