2009 coachman Class C built on E-450 with V10 &5 speed 4.56 rear with 16" tires gets an average of 7.75 mpg at approximately 12k weight pulling a 2k car.

Previous rig was a Winnie class A short(22ft) with 454 TBI engine and 4 speed auto with 4:10 rear and 16" tires weight was only 8k pulling same car got 9.5mpg

Don't know the final OD ratio on either but it couldn't differ that much.

Was really expecting more from the Ford as it is only 415 ci vs the 454 and has newer tech. So that leaves the weight difference.

"It takes a certain amount of horse power to move something thru the air at a set speed. You can't change that by lowering the RPM of the engine. It will still need to make that power."

Finally, a physicist. Something is causing sufficient drag to cause your rig to need to burn that much fuel, like a dragging brake, or something is causing your rig to not burn fuel efficiently, like a vacuum leak. Or it's just that draggy, and there's nothing you can financially do to make it better, other than spending thousands to save hundreds. K&N in a big pharse, imho; their systems usually open the intake to hot air from behind the radiator, WAY BAD, and a bigger waste than any benefit from a maybe lesser restrictive, and possibly lesser protective, filter media.

Today's numbers

2250 rpm 60mph

2400 rpm 65mph

2600 rpm 70mph

2800 rpm 75mph

How does this seem as compared to your V10 stats? My van weighs 14,000 lbs right now.

The two cheapest modifications you could make that WILL reduce your fuel consumption would be: Lighten your load and slow down.

Wow, I probably have my RPM # screwed up. 2380 makes more sense. It may be 2800 in 3rd gear.

Never seen over 65 with this thing.

Be on the road in a few days. I'll pay better attention.
