You didn't really mention what tpe of smog device you are spaking of but,...
If you like to breath clean air I'd leave it on there. even if you remove the most power robbing smog device on a 1996 model you will most like not be able to detect a increase in MPG UNLESS,UNLESS there is some thing bad wrong with that device.
A clogged Cat coverter, or bad bearings in a smog pump. something like that.

I happen to like clean air, i urge you to keep it working as it was designed.
If you want better milagem go with some synitic oil and if you have the buy some
bolt down roller rocker arms.

Hi Ted and Welcome to the Forum!

I've got good news and bad news for you.

The good news is your 460 has little in the way of smog equipment on it. Just an AIR pump which doesn't do much as far as affecting power or mileage. No catalytic in the exhaust on that era F53 - what you may see that looks like a cat is just a "resonator".

The bad news is there isn't much you can do to improve mileage on a 460 powered, 36 foot Class A. At a minimum, you could replace the factory muffler with something that flows better. The Ford muffler is VERY restrictive.

Next level is headers and full exhaust. You'll see much better power but you're still not going to see a big jump in mileage. MAYBE 1 MPG if you can keep your foot out of it.

Sorry, but that is the tale of woe with our big gassers.

on my 92/f53 i have the full length Banks headers, tossed the cataytic, removed the air pump as they tend to seize up at times, you don't want one of those pumps seizing up on the road, just get a shorter belt thats all, i even did away with the ac compressor lol ,,, egr is also disabled as i don't like my engines intake manifold gunking up with burned up exhaust residue,, to each his own,,, runs fine no codes
